Regular Council Meeting
4-21-03
Page 9
had both sides of the street and they could've had a Gazebo on one side and a park on one side
and they let a ball diamond go away that was built there and a lot of really nice things.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, what you are saying at this time is there is no long range plan for the land?
Mr. Riter said there are some plans and the Mayor would be much better at walking in the back
and bringing out 10 charts. If you ask him to do that he will and he will go through all these
charts of various trails etc. I'm not saying that I bought into all of his plans but what I am saying
is I recognize the value of a very limited resource. Are you asking me-and I know the question
because we are talking about the Planned Residential Development. If you are asking me am I
buying these properties for the Village so we could turn them into Planned Residential
Developments, absolutely not! That is not what iYs about. It's about taking a limited resource
and making it available for the residents of the Village to use for years to come. I can't tell you
what fashion that's going to take but it's going to take a positive fashion.
Mr. Fiorelli asked, at this time, you have no definite intention for the use?
Mr. Riter said there are certain portions of it where I think there certainly is a use and an
intention.
Mr. Fiorelli questioned, have they been spelled out?
Council President Buckholtz said let me reinforce what Mr. Riter is saying. If the Mayor were
here right now and I know all of us, I think we could probably do it with our eyes closed, in the
back room here there are maps, charts, artist renderings, at all levels; simple ones, ones that have
beeri-x'd out and drawn over, other ones that are absolutely gorgeous, you're not sure if you are
looking at----
Mr. Fiorelli asked, is that anticipation of the use?
Mr. Diemert said, you have to be a little more specific when you are talking to public ofFcials.
We acquired the Parkview Golf Course. That has now been converted into a beautiful park
system as well as the Progressive campus which brings in millions of dollars of income tax.
That's why we acquired that land with public money and converted it to a use that we felt would
be acceptable to this community, a quiet soft industry that would bring in maximum dollars on
the zoning that existed there. The Village acquired land on the corner of Highland near S.O.M.
Center in anticipation that intersections on freeways turn into gas stations-to protect the
beautiful greenery and the residential character of Mayfield Village, we acquired that land to
protect that from happening and to control what kind of use will go there. A fire station was
built on another piece of land that was acquired for the purpose of having public use and central
location accessing safety forces to your community and for your safety. So those are some
examples. The rest have been acquired for the same type of future use and protection of this
community.
Mr. Fiorelli questioned, for the Village?
