Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, February 20, 2017
Page 15
about anything. While the individual programs and events he has developed in the intervening
years are too voluminous to name, suffice to say they have grown multifold; and
WHEREAS, Bill Thomas has accomplished so much more than prograimning:
• After taking the position, Bill had only four months to oversee the construction of
Parkview Pool (which at that point was not much more than a hole in the ground), hire
necessary staff, develop policy and get the pool ready for the July Grand Opening. He
got it done.
• In 1974, Bill Thomas helped found the "East Side Roundtable", created to build support
and cooperation among communities. The Roundtable began with three communities,
now includes 35 organizations, and is more active and vibrant than ever.
• At the suggestion of resident Ann Regan, Bill developed the largest municipal program
for persons with disabilities in the State of Ohio. In 2010, Bill and Ann xeceived the
Milestones Appreciation Award for their efforts and, in 2012, the program was
recognized for its excellence by the Ohio Parks & Recreation Association.
• In 2013, Bill partnered with the Mayfield School District and his counterpart in Mayfield
Heights, Sean Ward, to form Wildcat Sport & Fitness, a centralized fitness club
promoting health and well-being in our community at an extremely low cost to residents.
• Bill has been actively engaged with many local organizations including the East Side
Recreation Roundtable, Ohio Parks & Recreation Association, Mayfield Special
Olyrnpics, Kiwanis Club, Mayfield Alliance and the Cleveland Cliriic's Healthy
Mayfield. Bill has received much recognition over the years, mostly recently the 2016
Hillcrest Community Service Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed
upon him by the Ohio Parks & Recreation Association.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MAYFIELD
VILLAGE, OHIO, TIiAT:
Parks & Recreation Director William Thomas be and is hereby recognized
and congratulated for 18 years of dedicated and exceptional service to
Mayfield Village. On behalf of residents, business owners, departrnent heads
and staff, we wish him many years of health and happiness with his wife
Barbara and their three lovely daughters. Although he has officially retired;
we know that he will never stop bringing his brand of energy to the Village
and we look forward to seeing him perched on a lifeguard chair, with his
ever-present smile, watching over us for many years to come.
Mrs. Mills, seconded by Dr. Parker, made a motion to adopt Resolution No. 2016-04.
ROLL CALL: AYES: All Motion Carried
