Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, October 21, 2019
Page 2
Presentation by Danielle Echt, Assistant Recreation Director on proposed
new inclusive Parkview Playground
Thank you for allowing me to talk about a new inclusive Parkview Playground. I have been
working with Shane and Landscape Architect Jim McKnight on this design. The process of
putting this together has been exciting for me and I hope it is something we can bring to
Mayfield Village.
We all know that Mayfield Village is a beautiful area with qualities that make it a desirable
community to live in. I think adding this inclusive playground will enhance the community and
keep Mayfield Village on the forefront of creating top notch facilities and programs. This
playground will have less physical barriers and different equipment that all ages and abilities can
play with. It will be unlike any other playground in this area and I think there are some really
cool features. Hopefully everyone on Council was able to look at the design. We have also
included some here. But one of the things that I personally enjoy I think is the swing along
swing. This is a swing where an adult and child can swing together. We have contrabass chimes
in the center of the playground. Besides making music, it creates a strong vibration that people
can feel so someone who has difficulty hearing can feel the vibration to the music that they
produce. Of course, there's other musical instruments on the playground as well. The seesaw
can accommodate two to four people sitting in the seats. But with its flat top, other people can
sit on top so more people can use it and those people sitting on top don't have to worry about
climbing into a seat so it makes it accessible to more people. By including some basic workout
equipment as part of the playground, adults can also now get in some exercise while their child is
playing nearby. The surrounding playgrounds really don't have features like this. These pieces of
equipment help make the facility inclusive and unique.
It should also be known that there is enough space where other items could be added in the
future. We can also add things like more shade structures as needed.
The department had already planned to replace the playground within a few years because
Parkview is over 20 years old. It is used heavily and has seen a lot of wear and tear over the
years. Mayfield Village budgeted $500,000 for a playground. I was able to apply for two grants
and we received nearly $378,000 in funding. With this money, Mayfield Village would be
spending approximately $450,000 on a new inclusive playground. This is less than what we
anticipated overall. The timing seems right to construct this new playground for 2020.
I hope that you can consider replacing Parkview Playground next year. I think it would be an
asset to the community and an outstanding facility in the heart of the Mayfield Village
Recreation area.
I open it up to any questions or comments.
Council President Saponaro stated, thank you Danielle. Who has any questions or comments for
Danielle? Does anyone need Mr. McKnight to walk through any of the plans or address anyone
regarding anything on here? I think it's pretty self-explanatory. Excellent job. Congratulations
on the grants. It's outstanding. Anybody? Well thank you so much.
