Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Page 34
Council President Schutt asked, discussion?
Chief Carcioppolo stated, our 2013 ambulance which has been riddled with issues since we
received it mechanically needs a new engine. It has 41,000 miles on it. We took it in on Friday
because we were having diesel exhaust in the cab compartment. We identified a crank overflow
pipe that was pumping out diesel exhaust while the truck was idling. When we took it in, they
said, it needs a new motor. It's an International. Basically when those vehicles came out, in the
entire area, most people bought that size chassis and anyone that bought this specific
International Durastar Terastar chassis ended up having issues with the engine so at this point,
it's 6 years old, there's no warranty on it and the engine needs to be replaced so this is not a
budgeted repair. I asked about the engine when it's done but I guess the price includes the core
fee so they send the motor back to be remanufactured so we can't keep the engine and have it
rebuilt unless you want to pay the core fee which is $6,000. .
Mr. Meyers asked, is this the same vehicle they used to have problems with, diesel getting in the
crank.
Chief Carcioppolo replied, yes.
Mr. Meyers asked, has this truck been fixed for that before?
Chief Carcioppolo replied, yes.
Mr. Meyers asked, how many times? Is there any warranty on the repairs?
Chief Carcioppolo replied, no. The last warranty we had on the exhaust —
Mr. Meyers stated, I know it's an ongoing problem but I just figured maybe —
Chief Carcioppolo asked, the emission problem?
Mr. Meyers replied, yes.
Chief Carcioppolo replied, under warranty they replaced the entire emissions control system in
2017, but it only carries a 12 -month warranty. I tried to go that route and that didn't work.
Much the same with this engine, it's not, it only carries a 12 -month warranty when they put it in.
Mr. Meyers asked, the new engine?
Chief Carcioppolo replied, the new engine only carries a 12 -month warranty.
Mr. Meyers asked, is it a reman or brand new?
Chief Carcioppolo replied, it's reman by Caterpillar. I was hoping they would just have a new
motor put in that's totally different, but that's not the case.
