Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Page 8
other local law directors are paid and on both the retainer and the hourly fees, we are well within
the norm. As an attorney myself, I tend to be very demanding as a client. My standards for legal
representation are high and my expectations are exacting. For the record, I do believe that the
legal services that we have received from Mr. Coyne, Mr. Budzik, Ms. Weber and Ms. Kullik
have been very strong. More importantly, the legal advice that we receive is well researched
and it is honest. It's not always easy to get advice from your attorney that isn't what you want to
hear. Sometimes it's even harder when the answer you get is that there's no clear-cut yes or no
answer and there's a lot of gray area. That can be difficult to deal with. But like it or not, the
truthful answers give us the guidance and the direction that we need. Tony, I am very
appreciative of that.
One final thing I want to mention is that I believe each and every member of this Council is fully
capable of evaluating a contract, ordinance or resolution determining its reasonableness and then
voting in accordance with what you believe is in the best interest of Mayfield Village. In this
case specifically, I believe you were presented with a Resolution which is fair, reasonable and in
the best interest of the Village. Please know that you are always welcome to raise questions or
ask for more information and we will gladly respond. Thank you.
Council President Schutt asked, does anyone else have anything to add to this?
Mr. Meyers stated, I do. In reference to the Resolutions, when we were presented at the
Organizational Meeting with 2020-04, I had asked before the meeting for discussion on the
differences in the money, the hourly rate and I was assured before the meeting that it would be
brought up before we voted. Not one word was said before we voted. I had to dig for the 2018-
04 Resolution because it was never presented to us and I just felt that it needed to come to light
that I don't understand how you change a figure and you don't explain it to the rest of Council.
You hand it to them and they vote. That's why I brought this to everybody's attention. I
appreciate it. Thank you.
Mayor Bodnar stated, I don't want to belabor this point, but Mr. Meyers, you did not speak to me
directly about that. I came prepared to answer questions. It was a miscommunication and I told
you with a text message that night I took full responsibility for that. I tried and I can document
five attempts to contact you after that meeting to talk about everything because there were other
things at that meeting I thought you might want to talk about also and you did not respond.
Instead you wrote a letter to Council on Friday. You did not even copy anybody in the
Administration. You demanded that action be taken tonight. In all fairness, I took responsibility
for the miscommunication. There was no bait and switch. I do want to make that clear on the
record. The old contract was from two years ago. We never said this was identical to the old
agreement. We said here's the Agreement. Please evaluate it. Let's talk about it if you have any
questions. Nobody had any questions. Mr. Schutt opened it up for discussion. You didn't ask
anything. Nobody else did either.
Mr. Meyers stated, I definitely brought it up to Administration, Diane, and I talked to Ron
Wynne about it earlier that day so I did bring it up to I believe the proper channels. Thank you.
Council President Schutt asked, any other comments?
