Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
January 23, 2023
Page 5
Prior to 2022, just about every month had a percentage increase. This past year, we have
seen a 22% reduction in speeds of 85+.
Splitting the year in half, the average citations we wrote per month went down 38% from
1,300 a month to 820 a month. The 80+ we would average 353. Now it's down to 205 per
month. The number of cites per hour went down from 38 to 26.
Our officers are still up there doing normal traffic stops, DUI arrests, DUS arrests,
warrants, regular speeding tickets. We still had 772 traditional traffic stops, issuing over
500 citations. 162 citations were 90 miles an hour plus, 35 citations over 100 plus.
The combination of the traditional traffic enforcement and the photo enforcement has
shown a pretty good reduction in the number of high speeds.
When you compare it to 2019, we still have issues on the freeway that we need to deal
with, so we are not out of the woods, but again, I think we made quite a bit of progress.
Chief Matias asked, any questions?
Mrs. Jurcisek stated, I have a couple. The 772 citations, were those just all speeding citations or a
combination?
Chief Matias stated, most of them are speed, but there's a lot of times where there's other cites
mixed in.
Mrs. Jurcisek asked, how does that compare to the previous year?
Chief Matias replied, it's about normal what we do. But I think some of the concern when we
started the photo enforcement program was that we kind of let the traditional go to the side and
not continue to do that. It's probably pretty close to what it was. Traffic citations increased this
year a little bit.
Council President Schutt asked, any other questions for Chief Matias?
Mr. Meyers asked, any word on the cars, Chief?
Chief Matias replied, the last word I had two weeks ago, Statewide told me the 2022 Charger, they
should have it by the end of the month is what they told me and then we will start putting the
equipment in.
Mr. Meyers asked, so we should be in good shape?
Chief Matias replied, I hope so.
