Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
Monday, July 15, 2024
Page 3
all of his medications or treatments are covered by insurance. You can imagine it's very costly to
us.
The opportunity to live in this home has afforded us a safe comfortable environment for us to
move through this challenge. Some of you may know or have seen John. John is invested in
Mayfield Village. Currently he is still able to be mobile on a motorized scooter from time to time
and is frequently seen touring the Greenway Trail. Also with our grandchildren at the pool. If
you speak to Mr. McAvinew and some of the lifeguards at the pool, you will be told that John's a
funny guy and spends a lot of time at the pool. He loves our city. He loves the trail. He loves his
grandchildren. Sometimes when John is feeling down in a situation, he will get on his scooter and
take the trail all the way to the park. This gives him peace and joy during a time that is not very
joyous. There is an opportunity for him that would not be available if we had to leave the Village.
Our family participates in many of the activities of the Village. We haven't missed a Mother's
Day Pancake breakfast in several years. John and our grandchildren participate in St. Patrick's
Day activities as well as the pool parties, Grove concerts and many other things. For us to be able
to have John share these moments is invaluable. Then there are the days he cannot move out of
his chair, sleeping or feeling very ill. The weight and stress of terminal illness can be very stressful
and difficult. I will be 70 years old soon. John will be 73. We do not have a large family. Even
if we could find another home to rent in the timeframe given, we could never pack up 10 years of
a household in this short timeframe. To find another home to rent that we can afford is going to
be very difficult. To move John in his current healthcare state would be very difficult and
somewhat dangerous during his current medical therapies.
I am sure the decision to sell this house is a fiscal one. I know taxes have just been raised to the
Village by 18%. If you look back over the 10 years that we have lived here, you will find that we
rarely call the city for anything in the house. We undertake many of the minor things ourselves.
The only two large expenses in 10 full years have been the roof repair and there was a sewer pipe
damaged a couple years ago that had to be repaired. Unless I am incorrect, our rent pays the taxes
on the home.
I understand that this decision needs to be made, however what I am asking is for your
consideration to reconsider. I am asking that you look beyond the business decision and see the
dire need of two senior citizens, one terminally ill, who believe in and support Mayfield Village
and find the compassion to let us stay in our home until our situation changes. It would not be
easy for us to pay additional rent monthly, but if raising our rent would afford us to stay in the
home, I will do what I have to do to make that happen.
If I need to go back to work part-time, I will make that arrangement. If you decide and feel it is
not possible for us to stay in our home, then I respectfully request that you give us until Spring to
be able to see where we are in our journey, pack up the house and find another place to go. This
journey is a very sad one for our family and I am hoping you will not take the things that make
John smile away from him as we navigate through this. Thank you so much for your time.
