MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF COUNCIL
Mayfield Village
September 27, 1999
The Council of Mayfield Village met in regular session on_Monday, September 27, 1999 at 8:00
p.m. in the Mayfield Village Senior Center/Community Room. Council President Bill
Mazquazdt presided.
ROLL CALL: Present: Mr. Buckholtz, Mr. Busa, Mrs. Cinco, Mr. Ilacqua,
Mr. Mazquazdt, Mrs. Mills and Dr. Parker
Absent: None
Also Present: Mayor Rinker, Mr. Brett, Mr. Cappello, Mr. Diemert,
Mr. Metzung, Chief Mohr, Mr. Samac, Chief Stevens, Mr. Thomas
and-Mrs. Roman
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was given.
OPEN PORTION
Diane Fermi 34795 Lakeview Drive, Solon, said referring to your purchase of the Mayfield
United Methodist Church, we represent members of the Church who aze opposed to the sale of
their church. I grew up in Mayfield Village and have attended the Mayfield United Methodist
Church my entire life. Many of us are upset and disappointed in the sale of our Church. We are
concerned about what will happen to it. If the Village goes through with the purchase of the
Church, we would like the Village to consider that we would like to see it remain a Church and
that people remaining there would be able to use it as a Church after the present Congregation is
gone. Or that it would be offered for sale to another Church or Congregation. That is our concern
and we hope as the process goes on we will be able to be a part of that. We know that it is a few
years off before the Congregation leaves, but we feel this is our only hope--to see it remain a
Church. They hope to see it remain a Church on that corner as it has been for 165 years.
Jim Sw~e 6812 Wilson Mills, said I am a concerned citizen of Mayfield Village and opposed to
the Village buying the Church. First of all, any of the offers you had gotten have stipulations
which will be difficult to overcome. The two million dollazs seems to be quite a bit because of
these stipulations. Will they be there rent free for 3 years? Mr. Swaye asked the Law Director if
the resolution is subject to referendum. Before voting on this, I hope you will take into
consideration that we are trying to keep this Church and allow them to have some remuneration
from the sale of it but somehow or another be able to save the Church if we can.
Council President Marquardt asked Mr. Diemert to respond to Mr. Swaye's referendum question.
Mr. Diemert said the ordinance would be subject to referendum as is most legislation that does
not have an emergency clause.
