This evening I am here on behalf of the Mayfield City
School District first to extend a personal thank-you to Mayor Rinker and members of Council for
the generous donation to our first aid training program. Several months ago one of your young
residents was recognized and honored by this Council for saving his mother's life when he
performed the Heimlich maneuver while she was choking. It was because of our Basic Aid
Training program that this young hero knew how to perform this maneuver. Each year I recruit
and coordinate training for volunteers with health related background to teach Basic Aid
Training (also known as BAT) to every 4th grade class in our District which is approximately 350
students. 'The information taught in this class is so valuable that the program is now part of our
4th Grade health curriculum. The instructors teach one time per week for about 7 weeks on a
variety of topics including poison, fire, basic first aid, water safety, bike safety, choking and
rescue breathing. Supplies are required to teach this course. She showed a BAT booklet and said
the booklet is given to every 4th grader. We have mannequins for which I have to purchase face
shields so I will use your generous contribution this year to purchase supplies for this year's
course. I would also like to bring to attention that one of your members of Council is one of our
volunteer instructors-Dr. Parker-who has been with our program for many years and is an
instructor at Center School. Thank you so much for recognizing the value of this program and for
~~ your support in aiding us to continue to teach our youth.
Mayor Rinker and Council President Buckholtz thanked Ms. Olson for her comments.
COMMENTS FROM MAYOR RINKER -Oath of OfficeBOA Appointment: Joseph Prcela
