ARCHITECTURAL BOARD OF REVTEW NOVEMBER 16, 1988 PAGE 2
and suggested that any changes to the planter and sign should be reflected
on the plans when they are returned to the Planning Commission. B. Zergott
moved to accept the plan as submitted with the proposed changes, definitely
keeping in consideration an expanded brick planter bed for the signage;
to definitely consider landbanking at least parking spaces 2, 3, and 4 to
try and add some green space along Lorain Road, and that a sample of the
siding and a paint chip be submitted before the Planning Commission meeting,
seconded by M. Case, and unanimously approved.
2) Sakura Japanese Restaurant, 26225 Great Northern Shopping Plaza (north).
Proposal to renovate store front for restaurant.
Referred by Planning Commission November 8, 1988.
J. Matricardi, Matrix Engineering, presented colored rendering of the
renovations to the store front explaining that: shoji panels (light wood
and unstained) will be installed inside the windows; lava rock will be
installed under the windows, but wi11 not be installed adjacent to the
windows as shown on the plans at the request of the owner of the shopping
center, and they would continue the shoji panel treatment in that area;
and that the exterior wood portal would probably be stained light brown.
The Board discussed other treatments for this area, but decided the panels
would be preferable. They did point out that the aluminium frames aro.und
the windows and doors would not be compatible to the other materials, and
Mr. Gallagher recommended that they be painted brown or black to either
blend in or contrast with the other materials. Mr. Matricardi was advised
to revise the drawings to reflect the groposed changes. B. Zergott moved
to accept the remodeling proposal for Sukura Restaurant noting that the
lava rock will not run.up along side the windows and will go to a height
directly below the windowss we are asking that the aluminium frames be
painted to contrast or be compatible with other materials; and that a
stain sample or number for the timber portal and a color number for the
aluminium paint be submitted, seconded by M. Case, and unanimously
approved.
III. SIGNS:
1) Dr. Philip D. Huf.fman, 5135 Dover Center Road (heard at this point).
Ground sign.
Referred from Board of Zoning Appeals November 2, 1988.
Building Commissioner Conway explained that the sign had received a vari-
ance and that the Board of Zoning Appeals had requested'the Architectural
Board to review it. Dr. Huffman explained that the wood sign would be
brown with white letters, that lighting would be installed in the shrubs
around the base. After some discussion, it was decided that the sign
could be installed on a low mound, approximately one foot high, with
shrubs and flowers on the mound. Dr. Huffman will submit a landscape plan
to the Building Department arid Mr. Zergott will review the plans in the
office on Friday. Mr. Gallagher moved to approve the sign subj.ect to a
landscape plan being submitted for Mr. Zergott's review, seconded by
M. Case, and unanimously approved.
VI. ADJOURNMENT;
The meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
M. Case, Chairwoman B. Oring, Clerk of Commissions
