this two-part system, starting with a 40 mil (cured thiclness) of elastic
asphalt and a 3/4 inch, R-3.1 fiberglass drainage/insulation board
combined to create a barrier to water penetration. There are different
thicknesses of boards, but they are requesting the 3/4 inch board which
is used most frequently and will drain 72 gallons of water an hour per 1
foot width. This system must be applied by an employee who has been
trained and certified by Owens-Corning in order to be covered by the 10
year limited guarantee for residential buildings. Mr. Smith maintains
that the products that are being used now are actually damp-proofing. Mr.
Conway advised that if a house has an unfinished basement the contractor
is only required to use a spray applied product. Mr. Greco, a builder
explained that he is quite excited about this product and that it only
costs the buyer about $1,000.00 more, but he would like to use it in all
his homes. Mr. Smith plans to insist that the contractors nm drain tile
on both sides of the footer. Mr. Burk pointed out that on masonry walls
the code requires 3/8th inch parging. Mr. Smith stated that
Owens-Corning does not require parging, but he only deals with poured
walls, however he believes the product should be approved as recomnended
by the manufacturer. Mr. Conway agreed, that if the Board does approve
the product, it should be approved as recorrunended by the manufacturer.
Mr. Greco stated that parging is only done to seal the porous block and
the manufacturer is saying that this is not necessary because this
product will seal the bloclc from the moisture. Mr. Banks pointed out
that to rema.in certi:fied they must apply this as stipulated. This product
can be used on an older home, but this is not the market that Mr. Smith
is interested in. Mr. Smith stated that no individual can buy this
product without being certified by Owens-Corning> Mr. Conway stated that
the Board can approve the product based on the condition tha*_ it isC
installed by a certified installer then- he can require that the
contractor would have to provide him with proof of certification. He
further stated that Mr. Smith has done about 95% of the basements in
North Olmsted. Mr. Conway further stated that he does not remember a
block wall going in within the last two years. Mr. Conway stated that
the only conflict that he sees between the code and this product is the
parging and pointed out that since there is a CABO approval on the spray
portion of the system, the material is approved, however there is no
approval on the fiberglass board. Mr. Kazak maintains that parging is
really not effective. Mr. Greco stated that getting a 10 year guarantee
from Owens-Corning alleviates his concerns. In response to Mr. Schulz's,
Mr. Smith advised that he is not familiar with some of the other methods
he mentioned. He stated that all poured walls wi.ll crack, but this
product is gua.ranteed to protect cracks up to 1/16th inch for 10 years.
He guarantees his walls for one year. J. Kazak moved to accept the use
of Zuff-N-Dri on both the poured walls and block walls without parging
with the condition that this material is applied by an installer who is
certified by Owens-Corning, seconded by J. Konold, and unanimously
approved. Mr. Banks explained that Owens-Corning does check on the
installers periodically.
VI I .
