•--? _ <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />PLANNING CONIlMISSION <br />MINUTES-0CTOBER 12,, 1993 <br />7:30 P.M. <br />I. ROLL CALL: <br />Chairman Gorris called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. <br />Present: K. 0'Rourke, A. Skoulis, J. Thomas, and B. Gorris. <br />Absent: L. Orlowski and R. Tallon. <br />Also Present: Assistant Law Director Dubelko, City Engineer Deichmann, Building <br />Commissioner Conway and Clerk of Commissions Oring. <br />II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES: <br />J. Thomas moved to defer the review of the minutes of September 28, 1993 until <br />the end of the meeting, seconded by K. 0'Rourke, and unanimously approved. <br />III. BUILDING DEP.ARTMIINTT REQUESTS : <br />1) Wal-Mart Store, 27254 Lorain Road (former Sherwin Williams site including part of <br />Cross Roads Dealership and property at 27423 Mill Road). <br />Proposal to construct building. <br />Tabled at meeting of July 27, 1993. <br />Mr. Newberry,. engineer representing Wal-Mart, read a statement directed to <br />Plarnzing Commission of the City of North Olmsted which reads as follows:.In order <br />to fully explore other sites that have been recently brought to our attention, <br />Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. respectfully requests a postponement of the matter before <br />the Planning Commission this evening until the next available date. Given a <br />little extra time to carefully consider options offered by Mayor Boyle and his <br />administration, we believe «e can make a"decision that saould work to the benefit <br />of both Wal*Mart and the community. We were able to reach this point through the <br />collaborative efforts of inembers of this Administration and the business <br />community. However, to release any more details at this point would be premature. <br />We appreciate the patience of this conunission and residents of North Olmsted. He <br />clarified that they were asking to table the proposal until the next available <br />date pending withdrawal of this proposal. Ma.yor Boyle read a prepared statement <br />"We could not have gotten to this point without cooperation from Wal*Mart and <br />from quite a few people in our comrmun-ity, in the development field and within my <br />administration. I would 'like to extend a very special thank you to Thomas <br />Herbster and Paul Miller who have been so steadfast in their efforts. Please also <br />bear with me while I recognize the people who were able to make things happen - <br />our Law Director Michael Gareau, aur Director of Public Service Ralph Bohlmann, <br />our Director of Finance Jim Burns, my Administrative Assistant Nancy Wlodarski <br />and aur City Engineer Paul Deichmann. I would also like to thank <br />Carnegie Development Corporation, John Larsen and Pamala Hanover of Squire, <br />Sanders and Dempsey and Roger Newberry of Seymor D. Weiss & Associates for <br />providing us with their expertise and advice. It goes «ithout saying that we <br />sincerely appreciate the fairness with which Wal*Mart negotiated through its' <br />representatives, Mr. Say, Mr. Nelson and Mr. Bingham was instrumental in why we <br />are here tonight./Most of all, I want to thank you residents for being so patient <br />through this whole ordeal and our planning commission, who ha.s always worked in <br />the best interest of our community./Ed Boyle. Mayor Boyle also recognized other <br />people who were involved. Mr. Strnad, a resident, demanded to know if a Wal-Mart <br />is going to be built on this site and wanted a yes or no answer.
