The temporary sign that they were granted did
bring in business. They want to replace the existing First String sign with ane
of their own. Mr. Purper would have liked.the owner of the center to be present
so he could be advised that these signs are not going to be allowed again. The
members agreed tha.t a sign program should be correlated by the owner and the
tenants. Mr. Koberna believed that their wall sign was visible from the road, and
Mr. Grace agreed. Ms. Harris pointed out that the Paper Place across the street,
which has anly been in business for a year, ha.s a sign; and she merely wants to
replaee an existing sign, not add one. Again she mentioned the competition that
they were faced with. Mr. Graee pointed aut tha.t they could have a problem since
this is a sit down restaurant, not just a pizza place and it had a long history
in North 0].msted. The members agreed to replacing a sign, but warned the
applicant that all nonconforming signs must be removed by January 1, 1998. Mr.
Purper would like some agreement that other stores would not be coming back, but
Ms. Harris could not speak for the owner. If this is approved, Mr. Maloney
requested that the owner get a copy of the motion. J. Maloney moved to grant the
request of Frankie's Pizza, 4641 Great Northern Boulevard, for a variance to
replace an existing ground sign for an individual business, for a 67 square foot
variance for total sign area, a 1 foot height variance and a 3 foot location
variance from right of way, contingent on the other sign being removed and the
landlord being notified that this is being granted only because it is replacing
an existing sign and with the eondition that the existing insert be removed from
the multiple tenant pole sign, seconded by W. Purper, and unanimously approved.
The Builcling Commissioner will send a letter to Columbia Land Development stating
the stipulations. During the framing of the motion, Ms. Harris agreed to remove
the small insert from the existing pole sign. Variance granted.
13. Charter.One Bank, 25290 Lorain Road.
Request for vaxiance (1123.12). Request variance to change faces in existing
prohibited pole sign and request 7 square foot variance for total sign area.
Violations or Ord. 90-125, Sections 1163.22(a) and 1163.11(a).
Chairman Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. The oath was
administered to Mr. Leech, sign contractor, who explained that this was formerly
Woman's Federal Savings and they axe merely changirig faces in the existing signs.
B. Grace moved to grant a variance to change faces in the existing prohibited
pole sign and a 7 square foot varianee for total sign area, with the stipulation
that the non-conforming signs.must be removed before January 1, 1998, seconded
by R. Gomersall, and unani_mously approved. During the framing of the motion it
was noted that the 1998 stipulation had not been made and should be added, at
that time Mr. Leech stated that they had advised their customer to change to a
conforming sign and not use the pole sign because of this.
14. Chuck E. Cheese, 26092-26122 Great Northern Shopping Center.
Request for variance (1123.12). Request 77 square foot variance for total sign
area allowed for a wall sign; request variance for 2nd wall sign on unit; and
request 60 square foot variance for total signage allowed for a business unit.
Chairman Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. 7he oath was
administered to Mr. Wagner, sign contraetor, who explained that Chuck E. Cheese
took over 3 units of a building with 127 foot frontage. The restaurant on the
other side of the building has 3 signs, they are requesting two signs, they will
be adding a logo and the word "Pizza" on the Brookpark Road elevation. The
members had no problem with any of the request considering the size of the
building. W. Purper moved to grant the requests of Chuck E. Cheese, 26092-26122
8
