?k
south'end in order to help preserve some trees as suggested by the forester. Mr.
Cawrse, who has been working with the forester, presented a plan showing the
trees that he would like to save. There are some oaks that range from 18 to
30-some inches which would be important to save, some of them are on the eastern
property line. With the mounding in place as originally shown, many of these oa.ks
would be lost, they ha.ve also modified the parking and entry in order to save
other trees. If they can curve the mound, still maintaining the height, they can
save almost all the trees along the property line. The mound would have to remain
behind the truck dock, and trees there will be lost, but he agreed that they
could put a heavier stand of pines in that area. Regarding the drainage ditch on
the condominiinn property, Mr. Newberry advised that there would now.be drainage
inlets along the property line to restrict the flow into the ditch. Mr. Gallagher
suggested a drain tile to keep the trees from being immersed in water. Mr.
Newberry pointed out tfiat the ditch would still have to drain the condominitnn
properties and clarified that : their parking 1ot would be drained by a retention
system. Mr. Zergott cautioned that trenching along the trees would damage them.
Mr. Cawrse stated that he would be working with the forester, and if they are
making the effort to save the trees, they want them to live. Mr. Zergott had
received some new information from Mr. Wendell, in which he suggested
eliminating some more parking spaces to save a few more trees. Mr. Newberry
stated that they have fewer spaces.than Wal-Ma.rt wants at present, but a few more
than the city requires. (Mr. Bingham macle some remarks from the audience, but
they were not audible.) Mr. Cawrse read the forester's report and advised that
they would work with the forester wherever possilble. There might be some problems
storing trees prior to transplanting them, and in some instances it would be less
- expensive to buy larger trees than to try to save some of the existing. They are
-• trying to.-use decent size plant material. Mr. Zergott had a more recent
landscaping- plan which the forester had given him and he was pleased with the
landscaping, but suggested adding more pine trees along the east area, especially
- in the area: of the loading dock. Mr. Sohn noted that they had added some new
parking spaces, the developers advised that they had added some trees where there
were no trees or where some of the trees were not worth saving. Mr. Sohn pointed
out an area where they might sa.ve some trees, but the developers did not believe
that they would survive because of the parkirig lot. Mr. Cawrse again mentioned
saving the trees on the southeast side. Mr. Sohn would like some changes in the
area of the truck dock, but Mr. Newberry advised that they needed that room for
turning radius; however he is trying to move the curbs somewhat to eliminate
retaining walls. He also advised that they must have access for fire equipment
behind the building. Mr. Gallagher agreed that would be needed. A 60 foot long,
10 foot high wall is plarmed to screen trucks fron the condominituns. The members
discuss the plans privately. Mr. Herbsman presented the materials to be used and
explained that the bisilding would be a split face block with a two tone color
scheme, with a lighter Eaglet Beige (SW 2193) on the upper portion and Row House
Tan (SW2206) below the accent band which would be Prairie Sand-(SW2194) and the
sign band would be Quail Brown (SW1084). He ad.vised that the loading dock splays
down and is shielded by a wall that goes up .to the accent band on the building;
the trash compactor will also be hidden by a wall, the garden center will be
enclosed with a metal picket fence also in brown. Mr. Zergott would prefer
something more substantial, and Mr. Herbsman advised that they might consider
piers with a low lrnee wall. It was clarified that the building was split face
block with some Dryvit on the front area. The Dryvit will be Sherwin Williams
#2187. Mr. Sohn would prefer that they use brick, instead of block, on the lower
portion of the building. Mr. Gallagher agreed. Mr. Herbsman believed that it
would be easier to remove graffiti on a smoother finished material than it would
be on brick. Mr. Gallagher stated that he had never ha.d problems with his brick
3
