. ,r? . ,
Newberry stated that this truck entrance sign was included to keep trucks off the
the other streets. Ms. Boyle questioned if the entrance signs should be that
large and if signs were needed at all three entrances. Mr. Maloney noted that
even though a ground sign is allowed to be 50 square feet, they are asking for
three of them and suggested that reducing them to 2 by 10 feet or 2 by 8 feet
would still accomplish the same purpose. Ms. Boyle agreed. Mr. Gomersall stated
that should only state "Wal-Mart" the other graphics should be eliminated. The
members discussed the motion. Mr. Gomersall marked a plan indicating the changes.
Regarding the signs over the overhead doors in the Tire and Lube shop, Mr.
Newberry explained that there are 6 bays and one of them is a through bay which
allows two cars to have their oil changed and two bays where tires or batteries
can be changed. He clarified that these 3 signs were needed over each bay on the
west elevation and c].arified that they were non-illuminated. The members
disagreed and believed that anyone having work done would stop in at the service
counter and the employees could indicate which door to use. As the members
discussed the signs among themselves, they decided that all the ground sign faces
should be reduced to 2 by 8 feet but there wou].d be some block beyond the sign
face. It was noted that the square footage stipulated in the request would not be
correct after the sign areas had been reduced, and Mr. Conway advised that he
would re-figure it and present the exact figure at the next meeting. R. Gomersall
moved that in reference to the variances requested by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.,
property located on Brookpark Road, east of the Westbury Apartments and west of
Colebrook and Clareshire Condominiums, the following variances would be granted:
for the "Wal-Mart" sign over. the main entrance on the west face of the building
(sign number 1) to a11ow only a 5 by 39 foot sign; also the second wall sign,
(sign rnunber 8) will be 25 by 7 foot (181 square feet) "Tire and Lube Ecpress"
sign which is to be on the south elevation only; all other wall signs will not be
erected. The monument sign located at the main entrance at Brookpark Road (sign
number 11) shall be 2 foot by 8 foot and will only carry the words "Wal-Mart";
the pylon sign to be located at the Chester Restaurant entrance (sign number 12)
shall be 2 by 8 feet with no advertising other than the name "Wal-Mart"; a
monument sign located at Country Club Boulevard entrance (sign rnunber 13) shall
be 2 by 8 foot and will only carry the name "Wal-Mart" Saith no other advertising;
the board will grant a variance for two of the ground. signs, (rnunber 12 and 13)
at Country Club Boulevard and at Great Northern Boulevard for their location in
the 35 foot prohibited triangular area; and the monument sign near the garden
center is a 1 by 4 foot split face directional sign (number 14) and is not to
exceed 5 feet. These are violations of Ordo 90-125, Sections 1163.11(a);
1163.11(b); 1163.12(a); 1163.12(b); 1163.22(c); and 1163.03(a)(1)(e). The motion
was seconded by J. Maloney. Mr. Koberna asked that the motion be amended to
include that the only building sign that was to be back lit was the main
"Wal-Mart" sign. Mr. Conway noted that since some of the variances had been
eliminated, some of the sections noted were not applicable. This will be amended
at the next meeting. Mr. Maloney seconded the motion as amended. The motion was
approved tmanimously.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
8
