The members had no problem with the request. J. Maloney moved to
grant the request of Mountain Jack's Restaurant, 4777 Grreat Northern Boulevard, for a 32
square foot variauce for excess total sign area for a business use to install wall sign. Arby's, 26368 Lorain Rd.
Request for variance (1123.12). Request variance to have changeable copy sign attached to
existing non-conforming pole sign. Note: All pole signs are to be removed by January 8, 1998.
Violation of Ord. 90-125, Section 1163.03(d).
Chau-mau Gomersall called all interested parties before the board. The oath was administered to
Mr. Clark, representing Arby's. Mr. Gomersall believed that the 5 lines of changeable copy was
too much. Mr. Clark responded that there was an option to have a 3 foot sign instead of 4 foot.
It was clarified that the letters were to be 6 inches. Mr. Koberna suggested that two lines of copy
should be enough. Mr. Gomersall wanted the width reduced to 5 feet to conform to the width of
the "Arby's"portion of the sign since the changeable copy portion is proposed to be wider. The
"drive thru" sign is also shown as 6 foot. It was decided that the "drive thru" is there now, but
under the new proposal the changeable copy and the "Drive Thru" would be all one sign and
both could be reduced in width. If the width is reduced to 5 foot and the new portion is 4 feet
long, it would give them 3 lines of copy. Mr. Clark questioned why Burger King had a sign 3
times as large as theirs. Mr: Kobema stated that Burger King's pole sign is there now, but it will
have to be removed in 1998 and questioned if they were aware that tlus sign would have to be
removed also. Mr. Purper noted that the frontage of the building also had to be considered for
sign area. B. Gomersall moved to grant the request to Arby's, 26368 Lorain Road, for a variance
to have a changeable copy sign attached to existing non-conforming pole sign with the stipulation
that the changeable copy sign along with the sign for drive through service is to be 5 foot by 4
foot or 20 square feet of which 3 foot of the 4 foot height is for the changeable copy and also
with the proviso that all pole signs are to be removed by January l, 1998. Violation of Ord. 90-
125, Section 1163.03(d). The motion was seconded by W. Purper. Roll call on motion
Gomersall, Puiper, Koberna, and Maloney, yes. Ms. Boyle, no. Motion carried.
