Zergott.
Also Present: Building Commissioner Conway and Clerk of Commissions Oring.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF NIIN[JTES:
The board had overlooked approving the minutes of December 21st. and copies had been resubmitted.
M. Mr. Cpallagher abstained. Nlotion carried.
III. SIGNS:
Heard at end of ineeting.
lV. OLD BUSINESS:
1) Auto Accents, 25021 Lorain Road
Proposal to renovate bu.ilding including the addition of a large ahiminum accent band to support
signage on the north and west elevation of building.
Continued from Architectural Iteview Board February 22, 1995.
Variance for signage from Board of Zoning Appeals is required.
Mr. Poston, Vice President, and Mr. 5chlauch, sign contractor, presented color rendering of other Auto
Accent facilities which have been remodeled to reflect their new image which is being done nationally.
They presented a revised plan that eliminates the verbiage on the bump outs (sign states "Auto Accents"
and "Cellular One"), but they believe that the neon strip is necessary to carry on their image and they
have had no problems getting it approved in other locations. Mr. Poston offered to put the neon on a
timer so that it would go off after business hours. He maintained that this is not bright or glitzy and
without it they would lose the integrity of the concept. They have totally remodeled the interior of the
store aud would like to renovate the exterior instead of relocating elsewhere. Mr. Zergott questioned
that, if the neon was to be turned off at night, why they could not go with another type of lighted band.
Mr. Poston responded that this was a subtle identification, and during the winter would be visible late
afternoon and evening. Mr. Zergott noted that this did face a residential home on the west. Mr. Zergott
stated that he could never approve neon facing someone's home and doubted that he could approve it
on the north side. He believe that they should have some kind ofband that could go around the building.
Mr. Poston stated that they have found nothing on the books tliat states that neon is prohibited, and
seems to be an arbitrary opinion of the board. Mr. Zergott responded that this is the opinion of several
boards, and all the boards are trying to tone down the signage on Lorain Road. He advised that they are
merely a board of saggestion and the final decision would be up other boards. Mr. Yager stated that this
is an improved scenario, but he cannot understand the commitment to the neon band when they close at
