?.
6:00 p.m and 8:00 p.m., especially since the building is right on the edge of a residential neighborhood-
He noted that a resident was present at the last meeting, aud had advised that he could not attend this
one. He was concerned about the lighting on the west side. Mr. Yager stated that the developer may call
their opinion arbitrary, but the members do have some background in this area. He believed that the
lighting merely extends the sign and lighting should be limited to the front and not extended past the
word "Cellular". Mr. Schlauch advised that he has priced of other types of light, but the price is
considerably higher, and instead of a red line the size of his finger, it would have to be much larger. Mr.
Yager suggested that they put a piece of Plexiglas on its side with a white light behind it which would
transfer out, but would still stand out but be subtle. Mr. Poston asked if they should spot it with indirect
lighting and advised that instead of back lighting the burnps which are part of their identification, they
decided to go with the neon. He explained that other cities objected to the back lighting. It was clarified
for Mr. Gallagher that this was a red painted band with a small tube of neon on top. Mr. Yager clarified
that, even with the red band, the light would still show up as white. He explained that the city was trying
to get rid of the Las Vegas type of signs to improve the city's appearance. Mr. Schlauch stated this had
a more classy look, and was not in the least like Las Vegas. Mr. Poston wondered where the middle
ground might be and asked if the Board of Zoning Appeals might refuse the variance. He advised that
they did not want to lose more time. He stated that they gave up the graphics and they intend to remove
the graphics on the doors, and questioned if they could have the additional graphics on Lorain, if they
forget about the neon. Building Commissioner Conway advised that this board could not answer that
question, they can only suggest and the neon light was not a signage issue, it was an architectural issue.
The Board of Zoning Appeals must make that decision, but this board can make recommendations, just
as Plauniug Commission did. Mr. Zergott stated that the city is trying to eliminate both the excess
signage and the neon, so if they allowed one, and not the other, it would give the message to other
people that they could have what they want. It was clarified for Mr. Calmer, a resident, that the main
objection was to the neon, and to any light on the west side. Mr. Calmer asked if they had consider
tinted back lit glass which is more subtle. Mr. Schlauch offered to put a rheostat on the neon to take
away the sharpness. Mr. Yager stated that they can-continue on in this vein, and it could take longer,
but somewhere down the road, a decision is going to be made. Mr. Conway asked for information on
the existing pole and ground sign and advised that, depending on the sizes, they may or may not have to
go for a variance. B. Zergott moved to approve the Auto Accents proposal for the architecture with the
bump outs as long as they have limited the scope of signage, and would accept some type of red band as
long as it is not neon, the painted red band can be on both the north and west side, but if any neon or
special lighting is approved it is to be limited to the front of the building. The motion was seconded by
T. Gallagher, and unavimously approved. It was clarified that they do not have to remove the pole sign,
but it will be considered in the square footage in determining if they have to go to the Board of Zoning
Appeals.
2) Sunnyside Toyota (added to agenda and heard at this point), 26890 Lorain Road.
Continued from February 22, 1995.
Mr. Frye, Sunnyside Toyota, presented a revised rendering of the proposed Toyota building which had
been discussed at that last meeting with the discussion of the adjacent Saturn building. These
modifications are an attempt make the building more u.niform with the Saturn building as requested by
the board by including the basic look of the Saturn facility between the windows and adding some
compatible architectural features. They are also trying to keep the manufacturers happy with what they
are doing. He presented a sample of a synthetic stucco material equal to "Dryvit" in a natural white
accent color Grey fog. The window frame material will be aluminum medium dark Duranodic Bronze
2
