I./

CTTY OF NORTH OLMSTED
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW BOARD
NIIN[JTES - OCTOBER 18, 1995
I. ROLL CALL:
Present: S. Krieger, M. Yager, and B. Zergott.
Absent: M. (Yallagher
Also Present: Assistant Building Comnnissioner Rymarczyk and Clerk of Commissioris Oring.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MNUTES: In the minutes of Ju1y 19th, on page, 2, under the Fortney and Weygandt proposal, Mr. Yager corrected
the Spelling of the name " Conaire", it should be "Kawneer". M. Yager moved to approve the minutes
of Ju1y 19, 1995 as corrected, seconded by -S. Krieger, and unanimously approved.
III. SIGNS:
1) James Lumber, 27375 Lorain Road.
Wall signs.
Variauce will be requ.ired.
Mr. James, of James Lumber, presented the proposal and explained that his business was part of H.W.I.
which is a hardware co-op. This is their design of what they want to do nationally. They need to do
something to make people more aware of what they do, since they install kitchen and baths, doors and
windows, and sell paints and stains, etc. The "Do It Best" is the national motto or logo, similar to
Handy Andy or Home Depot, which has a national image, and is needed in order to make the smaller,
independent store more recognizable. Mr. Yager asked if they had ever considered just changing their
name to let people know what they do. He listed the products of several businesses on Lorain Road and
noted how many products would be listed on all the signs up and down the road. He stated that it would
be impossible to tell drivers; who are going 35 miles an hour, all the products and.services each business
offers. He stated that at present they have a big "James Lumber" sign, several window signs explaining
what services they offer, and there axe display items that also show what they do. Mr. Yager stated that
he had never been in James Lumber, but he knew what they did. The city is trying to eliminate as much
signage as possible. He believed that there were other ways they could achieve their goals without this
signage. Mr. James responded that this had been a- family business for years. and changing the name
would cause problems. He further stated that the businesses that Mr. Yager mentioned were large
companies, which did a lot of national advertising, and had a national image. Mr. Zergott noted that
another company had wanted to list all their products such as "car alarms", etc. Mrs. Krieger stated that
several businesses, just recently, had been denied listing products on their signs. Mr. Zergott suggested
that they keep the James Lumber sigri and the Design Center sign and eliminate all the other signs,
including the mural. Mr. Yager understood what they needed, but believed that they could do it by other
means. Mrs. Krieger believed that "Design Center" would tell what they do. Mr. James explained that
the building is visible from three sides, and noted that they needed more visibility for people coming
from the mall. Mr. Yager suggested that a ground sign would help and noted that these signs were not
illuminated and would be hard to see at night. The members discussed rejecting the proposal and
returning to the board with another one. Mr. Yager asked what the "Do It Best" meant, since he has
never seen it. Mr. 7ames asked if they could give him a definite idea as to what would work. Mr.
Zergott suggested that he proceed to board of zoning appeals, see exactly how much signage they
would allow, and then come back with a design that conformed to that. M. Yager moved to recommend
