Tam, 5642 Dorothy Drive
Request variance to keep satellite dish antenna on roof of attached garage (faces front setback).
Violation of Section 1367.03(b).
Vice Chairman Kazak administered to Ms. Tam, daughter of the property owners, and neighbors, Mrs.
Conway and Mrs. Henry. Mr. Kazak advised that the dish was in violation because it is installed on the
roof. Build.ing Commissioner Conway explained that it is not actually in the front setback since it was
on the garage roof whieh is behind the front setback line. Ms. Tam stated that she tried it in two places
on the roof in back, but it would not pick up a signaL Even though the gaxage roof is lower, there are
no trees to interfere. Mr. Spoerke noted that the dish was directed toward the house, and questioned
why there was better reception there than on the back of the roo£ Mrs. Conway, a neighbor, stated that
she had not seen it uutil she received the notice for tlus meeting, but she believed that the installer
should have known where it should be placed. Building Commissioner Conway explained that no
permit was ever taken out. Ms. Tam responded that she got the installer's telephone number from a
friend, but she had not bought the dish from the installer. Mrs. Henry noted that Ms. Tam was only a
high school senior and questioned why her parents were not present. She went on to say that she was
more concerned about the makeshift carport with plastic covering it than she was about the dish. She
was advised to make a complaint to the Bu.ild.ing Department. Ms. Tam explained that she usually
represented her parents because they did not speak English. She further explained that they tried to
build another garage, but there was not enough room between houses, so they put up a car port instead.
Mr. Kazak suggested that they try to put the dish on a pole in the back or else higher on the roof. He
thought she might still need a variance, but it could come back to the board. Mr: Engoglia suggested
that she ask the installer to try it in the back, then ask the members to inspect it to prove that there is no
reception, then the board might be vvilling to make an exception. P. Engoglia moved to disapprove the
request of H. & S. Tam, 5642 Dorothy Drive, to keep a satellite dish antenna on the roof of an
attached garage. Violation of Section 1367.03(b). The mation was seconded by D. Spoerke, and
unanimously approved. Variance denied. Mr. Kazak suggested that she ask the Building Department to
make some suggestions to the installer. Ms. Tam stated that she had tried it in the back, and she would
just take it down.
