.. . ?-:.
reduced, they would not be visible. She did not believe that the architectural review board was
concerned with the size of the letters, they had questioned the need for the logo. Mr. Gomersall stated
that the size of the letters was up to this board and advised that if they vote on this, his vote would be
no. Ms. Ricchio asked if they could compromise by removing the logo thus reducing the overall square
footage. She was advised that the logo has been eliminated. She noted that one logo had been approved.
Ms. Riccluo suggested continuing this until next month, but both Mr. Maloney and Mr. Gomersall were
against the 7 foot letters, so all three other members would have to vote for them. Mr. Parrague thought
that since they approved one logo, it would set a precedent. Ms. Ricchio asked to reduce the letters to 6
foot 6 inches. Mr. Gomersall believed that 6 foot was large enough. Mr. Maloney stated that he had
gone up and down Lorain Road and he did not think that their distauce was that much greater than
some of the others. The members and Ms. Ricchio discussed tabliug the issue. Ms. Ricchio finally
agreed to the 6 foot letters and it was determined that this would reduce the length to 28.5 foot, inches
which would be an approximate 171 square foot sign. Mr. Gomersall stated that they would not need a
variance for excess signage for a business use, because they are allowed 175. For the business building
wall sign they would need a 96 square foot variance and a 2 foot variance for the height. R. Gomersall
moved to grant a request of Sportmart, 27260 Lorain Road for a 96 square foot variance for excess sign
area over the maximum signage allowed for a business building wall sign and a 2 foot variance for
excess height of a wall sign and that the logo will be elimiuated entirely. Violation of Ord. 90-125,
Section 1163.11(c) and 1163.12(a). The motion was seconded by J. Maloney, and unanimously
approved. Variances granted.
12. Media Play, 27270 Lorain Road.
Request for variance (1123.12). Request 203.5 square foot variance for excess sign area over the
maximum signage allowed for a business unit. Request 323.5 square foot variance for excess sign area
over the maximum allowed for a wall sign. Request 12 foot variance for excess height allowed for a wall
sigu. Violation of Ord. 90-125, Sections 1163.11(c) and 1163.12(a). #;-
Mr. Parrague, Media Play, W. Papandreas, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbster had been swore in previously.
W. Parrague explaiued that they had removed the words "music" "books" "movies" and "software" and
has eliminated the large blue triaugle, compromising on the logo. It was clarified that the arclutectural
review board had approved the shadow boxes as arclutectural features, not as signage. The logo now
represents the modern arts, the musical notes are the eyes, the book is the face, and the film stripe is the
hair. The architectural board had stated that if the logo remained, the letters should be reduced. The large
triangle has been eluninated and the smaller one with the logo is about 10 by 12 feet. W. Gomersall did
not believe most people would laiow what the logo stood for and had a problem with all the logos
businesses have been asking for recently. Law Director Gareau stated that logos were needed because the
names of the businesses did not explain exactly what they do. Mr. Parrague stated that the McDonald's
arches were easily recognizable, but they were not originally. Ms. Boyle said that she assumed by the
name that tlus was a video game store, but Sportmart or Office Max were self explanatory. She noted that
this logo was at the highest part of the store and she liked it, especially since they have eliminated some of
the blue. It was noted that the logo was 10 feet high and 12 across and the "Media Play" was about 56
feet across and the letters were about 6 feet lugh. Mr. Parrague stated that they were the largest tenant
and were the furthest from Lorain Road, so if they reduced it too much it would not be recognizable. Mr.
Gareau suggested that they remove the logo and put the "music", "books" "movies" aud "software"
which would be far more recognizable than the logo. Mr. Panague stated that these words were 2 feet
high and vary between 8 and 12 feet across. Mr. Maloney estimated that these words would be
approximately 92 square feet of lettering. Mr. Parrague stated that it would be less than that, since they
8
