.
are usually 12 to 15 square feet aud would be about 50 square feet. He agreed to eliminate the logo and
keep the words. Mr. Maloney suggested including the letters which Mr. Parrague said were
approximately 50 square feet and reducing "Media Play" to 5 by 50 feet, the sign area would be 250
square feet plus the 50 square feet which would amount to 300 square feet total which would leave 105
square foot excess. The members believed that this would be too much of a reduction on the largest
frontage in the center and did not believe that it would be consistent with the other signs. The members
estimated that, without the logo but with the words, the total signage would come to 386 which would
require a variauce for 191 square feet for excess sign area for a business unit and a 311 square foot
variance for excess sign area for a wall sign, and a 2 foot variance for excess height allowed. Mr. Maloney
stated that if the logo is removed they can reduced it by 12.5 feet and add 50 square feet. He stated that
the total sigual now came to 386 square feet and would be 311 instead of 323.5 and would be 2 feet
excess height instead of 12 feet. J. Maloney moved to grant the variance to Media Play, 27270 Lorain
Road for a 191 square foot variance for excess sign area over the maximum signage allowed for a
business uuit: to grant a 311 square foot variance for excess sign area over the maximum allowed for a
wall sigu: and to grant a 2 foot variance for excess height allowed for a wall sign. Included in this motion
it is further stipulated that there will be no logo on the building and the wording above the shadow boxes,
"music" "books", "movies" and "soflware" will be inserted at a maximum height of 2 feet. Violation of
Ord. 90-125, Sections 1163.11(c) and 1163.12(a). The motion was seconded by R. Gomersall, and
unauimously approved. Variauce grauted.
The members discussed the sign ordiuance and questioned why, when one word was on top of the other,
the height of both letters should be added together since the members though that Circuit City's letters
were 7 feet lugh. Law Director Gareau stated that there should be exceptions to the sign code for large
shopping centers that are set back and he agrees that the visibility is poor. He does not believe that the
city can outlaw logos. Also wheu Building Commissioner Conway cannot be present, they would like him
to send someoue, iu tlus case having the sign iuspector present would have helped.
T'he meeting was adjourned at 10:20 p.m.
6
?
R.
