?
support it on the cauopy. Mr. Yager felt that this could be redesigned to meet.the needs of tlus
board by altering the design of the canopy to incorporate the company's name. Due to the cost
factor, the applicarit does not believe it would be in his best interest to redesign the building and
eliminate the awniug. Mr. Kriekis explained the sign as proposed is permitted and allowed by city
ordinance and therefore this should not be an issue. He noted that the awniugs and the retrofit of
the street sigus are subject to approval by this board. Mx. 4'ager stated the purpose of tlus
committee is to make sure the proposal is aesthetically pleasing. He believed placing the sign in
the gable area would look terrible and reiterated this board is suggesting incorporating the logo
and the wording into one sign on the building. The canopy will have an aluininum frame. Mr.
Liggett would also like the building sign moved down from- its present location. Mr. Kalina
explained the awniug is shallow and the sign deep, which would mean it is almost impossible to
install a structurally sound sign in the location suggested. He believed the gable area was the best
possible location for this sign and stated placing the sign at the end of the awning would put
additional stress on the existing awning. Mr. Yager suggested the words "Einstein Brothers
Bagels," be stenciled into the avvuing using the same material as the logo and elaborated that the
sign then could easily be supported. Mr. Kalina stated the shape of the awuiug would then make
the sign look awkward. It was then recommended that the awuing be redesigned to accommodate
the lettering. Mr. Kalina stated that that area was never intended to be a sign band. In response,
Mr. Yager noted the roof was not meaut to hold a sign either. Mr. Kalina agreed, but felt
installing the sign in the recommended location would be structurally unsafe. Mr. Yager
recommended that they use the same fabric on the sign as is used on the canopy. He elaborated
the aluminum tubing can be brought up to create a vertical plain so as to have a flat surface for the
face of the sign. Mr. Kalina argued the existing awning is dry screwed to the building. Mx.
Liggett suggested creating a structured back to the building. IVdr. Kalina stated this would be
rather expensive to his client, who has only asked to reface an existing awning. Mr. Zergott
would like the Einstein Brothers removed from the canopy. In response to Yager's questiou, Mr.
Gallagher clarified that this board is a recommendation board. Mx. Liggett wondered how they
will attach the back part of the sign onto the roof. Mx. Kalina replied that he will angle it and
totally surround the posts with shroud. He noted that there will be leak holes in the sigu and
shroud to drain the water. 1Vfr. L,iggett felt the color is much too bright. Mr. Yager disagreed.
The revised plan shall be reviewed independently by Mr. Yager, Mr. Gallagher or NIr. Liggett.
T. Gallagher motioned to approve Einstein Brothers Bagels wall sign if it is brought down to the
level or as close to the awning as possible as the awniug. 'I'he sign shall follow the codes and
ordinances as far as space goes and the logo shall be removed. The motion was seconded by T.
Liggett and unanimously approved.
Mx. Kalina explained the existing ground sign will be refaced to create a corporate identity for
Einstein Brothers Bagels. 1Vdr. Kreikis presented photographs demonstrating what the sign will
look like upon completion. 1VIr. Katalina noted, the shape of the sign is normally rou.nd, however,
it was the building department's recommendation to reface the existing sign, as it would be more
acceptable according to code. Mx. Yager stated although he normally frowns on logos, this logo
actually presents the product in an effective manner. Mr. Kalina continued that if this board could
allow it, the sign would actually be round creating a more desired effect. Building Commissioner
Couway noted that a variauce would be required for a round sign, and because it would be uon-
