..
'.-.
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW BOARD
1VIINLJTES - DECEIVBEIZ 18, 1996
CONFERENCE ROOM - 5:30 P.M.
I. ROLL CALL: Chau7nau Zergott called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m.
Present: S. Krieger,lVi. Yager, T. Liggett, and B. Zergott.
Also I'resent: Assistant Building Commissioner Rymarczyk and Assistant Clerk of Commissions
Cornish.
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF IVIINUTES:
Mr. Yager had one comment concerning the previous review, he noted that not a foreground
building should be clarified and included not eliininated. He requested that the clerk fax him a copy
of the page in question as he will verify his comments. M. Yager motioned to approve the minutes
of November 20, 1996 with the modification noted. The motion was seconded by B. Zergott. Roll
call on motion Yager, Zergott, and I{rieger, yes. Liggett abstained as he was not present at the
previous meeting.
III. SIGNS:
1) Hollywood Video 4692-4678 Great Northern Blvd.
Proposal to renovate storefront wluch will include neon.
Referral to board of zoning appeals is required for signage.
Tabled at architectural review board meeting of 11/20/96.
Mr. Klien, architect, presented the proposal, which has been inodified since the November meeting.
I3e eaplauied the modifications include making the mountain scape into a physical element, that will
be free standiug from the building and act as an entrance way. Mr. Klien presented a photograph
showing that element. M-r. Yager explained at the last Yneeting he suggested, due to the depth from
Great Northern Blvd., using a more dynamic element for the mountain scape that can become a part
of the building. He noted, in response to those comments, Hollywood Video has added an entrance
portico. Due to the fact a relatively conservative approach was used, Mr. Yager recommended that
the entrance portico become the dominant element and eliminating tlae background mountains. Mrs.
Krieger believed that the yellow color, for the portico, is to bright. Mr. Yager would like to see the
portico centered. liRr. Klien noted the focal point of the portico is the entrance way, but did not have
a problem enlarging it slightly. Mr. Liggett did not mind the mountains being incorporated, but noted
the proposal appears incomplete as there is no definite starting or stopping point. Mr. Klien
explained, he has a limited amount of space to work with as he cannot extend into the Itini's space.
He agreed, if required, to include a neutral pier on both ends of the proposed signage creating those
distinctive points. The portico will be a I3ryvit acrylic stucco type of materiaL Mr. Liggett agreed
with Mrs. Krieger, that the.yellow should be subdued. He suggested using more of a creamish color
or possibly converting to a blue. Mr. Yager elaborated, that the portico could be blue, and the
background fascia remain a green color. Mr. Zergott explained in the past a sporting goods store had
attempted to put goal posts up in front of the store, but plauuing commission turned them down. He
believed a certain amount of continuity is needed within strip centers. Nlr. Zergott recommended that
this proposal retum to planniug commission. ,
