Although the grant period
began in 1984 little was oompleted until January, 1985. A street by street visual
survey was taken by Landmark Cmmission menbers pinpointing all buildings suspected
to be pre-1920. 'Ihis infonnation was then ocmq.?iled with auditor's records. Extensive
planning and organization preceded the ini.tial step of the job posting for a historic
research intern. A number of people applied for the position. Many oamussion meetings were held over several
wee7c.s to reach agreemealt as to how to best proceed. Input frc¢n the Director of
the Ohio Historic Preservation Office was sought. In early June it was agreed that
the project could not be ocmpleted under existing corrlitions. Mr. Steve McQuillin spent several days visually surveying,
photographing and oollecting local infor?nation on North O]msted buildings with can-
mission member help. He oaopleted 120 Ohio Historic Inventory Forms for the grant.
The remaining 114 properties were researched, photographed and docunerited by ocar
mission mimbers. In addition, the North O]msted Landmarks CcmmLi.ssion was allowed
access to title records at a local Title Qaipany to omiplete title chains on all
buildings thought to have been built before 1920.
Following the guidelines of the grant agreeTeit a lengthy report was prepared
by the Landmarks Ccnnission to acoompany the 234 O.H.I. fonns. The report included
historical background of North O]msted, a proposed local historic district for Butter-
nut Ridge R4ad, a Natianal Register nonination for a Butternut Ridge Road Historic
District, local plans to meet CLG requirnsents, local publicity, and maps docLune-nting
the newly-acquired information.
The grant was delivered to Coltunbus on July 31, 1985, culminating a hectic
exciting few months when mem]ers of the Landmarks Catanission spent days and
weeks campleting the Comprehensive Pre-1920 Historic Building Survey.
In Nlay, 1985, the Landmarks CaYanission held a public meeting to reoognize
eleven historic buildings on Butternut Ridge Road.
