/
Olmsted, also an author of western novels. The Commission will be working to tell his story in a
landmark designation report to be completed in 2013.
2012 PRaECrs
Butternut Historic District Survev
As a Certified Local Government, the City of North Olmsted, led by the Landmarks Commission,
was awarded a CLG grant to conduct an intensive level survey of the Butternut Ridge Historic
District. The purpose of the project is to update the historic inventory forms for contributing
properties in the district to improve recordkeeping and ultimately determine if the district
would be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The City contracted with the firm
of Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects in 2011 to perform the survey work.
Following research, field work, photography and analysis, the survey report and inventory were
completed and approved by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office in 2012. While the report
found the Butternut Historic District would likely not be eligible for National Register status, the
research, information and recommendations contained within the report will be invaluable to
the Commission as they identify properties which are prioritized for preservation.
Cemeterv Improvement Proiect
Significant progress was made in 2012 regarding recordkeeping for the City cemeteries.
Community volunteer and Olmsted Historical Society member Gary Porter continued his efforts
of organizing the existing records for Butternut Ridge Cemetery and Coe Cemetery. Records are
being assembled and inputted into a searchable database which will include all information
regarding the lot, the owners, the headstone information and any other pertinent records.
Also, the Olmsted Historical Society continues to maintain an account containing donations
toward future cemetery improvements.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
The Landmarks Commission has worked hard to form and expand partnerships with other city
government groups. Along with the Planning and Development Department, the Commission
continues a working relationship with the Mayor, City Council, and other boards and
commissions. The Landmark Commission's membership includes a member of City Council and
two members of the Planning and Design Commission.
The Landmarks Commission is proud to be a service agency of the Social Involvement Through
Education and Service (SITES) Program at North Olmsted High School. For many years, the
Commission has mentored one or more high school senior each semester. These students are
put to work on Landmarks Commission projects or tasks at Frostville Museum.
