MEMORANDUM
To: Planning & Design Commission, City of North Olmsted
From: Maher Holozadah, Senior Transportation Engineer, NOACA
Date: 1 /17/12
RE: Realignment of Lorain Road and Brookpark Road Traffic Study
Hisforical 8ackground of Traffic Study:
The city of North Olmstetl recognized the effect of the oblique alignment of Brookpark Road at its
intersection with Lorain Road and the implications of the proximity of this signalized intersection to the
signalized intersection of Lorain Road and Silverdale Road on the flow of traffic. The city, therefore, wanted
to examine the benefit of realigning a section of Brookpark Road with Silverdale, and develop useful lane
configuration options for such realignment. The study was funded through NOACA's Transportation Links
program with the city contributing 20 percent local match.
Scope of fhe Traffic Study:
The traffic study encompassetl the following two intersections: (1) Lorain RoadlBrookpark RoadlSpeedway-
Boston Market Driveways; and (2) Lorain Road/Silverdale Boulevard
Findings/ Results:
The stutly helped find that the proposed realignment will be beneficial in that it will eliminate one of the
closely-spaced signalized intersections, which will provide for better traffic flow, antl reduce potential traffic
crashes as better traffic control signal timing and phasing can be introduced. Traffic movements conflicts
can be eliminated, unnecessary traffic control signals and devices will be removed resulting in less
maintenance costs, and traffic from Brookpark Road to Silvertlale Boulevard and vice-versa can be
facilitated.
Conclusion and Recommendations:
It was concluded that either the proposed realignment of Brookpark Road with Silvertlale Boulevard or a
realignment of Brookpark with Canterbury Road would yield benefits that woultl make pursuing either one
worthwhile. Various lane configuration options were presenied relative to each realignment alternative. The
city of North Olmsted may want to evaluate the two realignment alternatives, determine which one to
pursue in the short or long term, and choose a most effective lane configuration option the city deems will
serve its community.
Attachment: PowerPoint
5856t
