potential alternative alignments. NOACA staff then evaluated the alternatives from the
perspective of traffic volume, safety, and efficiency. She introduced Maher Holozadah, a
transportation engineer with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) who
made the presentation (see attached).
Regarding the Lorain/Brookpark intersection, Mr. Parry asked if the turning radius met design
speed requirements and Mr. Holozadah said the schematic diagrams shown are conceptual only.
The idea for the study was to consolidate all the traffic at the intersection to be controlled by one
traffic signal. Mr. Bohlmann said looking at all the alternatives the driveway areas of the gas
station and Boston Market remain a concern. Mr. Holozadah said if realigning of Lorain and
Brookpark Road were considered there could be many more lane configurations to look into.
Regarding the Lorain/Porter/Butternut Ridge intersection, Mr. Holozadah said it was concluded
that the present roadway alignment delivers comparable benefits that might be realized from the
any improvement alternatives. Mr. Pan-y asked if the study considered school related traffic.
Mr. Holozadah said scliool traffic was not included in the study. Mr. Malone said living in the
area he could attest to it being over burdened during school hours from buses and vehicular
traffic. He felt that if northbound Porter Road traffic coiltinuing through or turning left onto
Lorain were allowed to discharge first before southbound traffic it would alleviate the majority
of confiision and backup at the intersection. Mr. Herbster said high school traffic mainly uses
Porter Road to access Lorain Road. The north Porter traffic traveling south should have a left
turning lane onto Lorain Road and cutting off south Porter or Butternut Ridge would cause
vehicles to use the library as a cut through. Mr. Orlowski agreed with the comments pertaining
to southbound traffic and synchronizing the lights better. Mr. Felleisen said he was in favor of
making the south Porter Road a one-way road during peak hours. Mr. Trapp said he's concerned
for the safety of pedesh-ians and suggested the area be studied further for pedestrian safety. Ms.
Wenger said the city found that increasing signal times may slightly improve safety but would
create increased wait times, so there are no obvious conclusions to the existing conditions.
C0MMUNICATION
Ms. Meredith moved, seconded by Mr. Malone, to appoint Ms. Nader, to serve on
Landmarks Commission for 2012, which passed 6-0.
Ms. Mcredith moved, seconded by Mr. Malone, to excuse Mr. Mahoney, which passed 6-0.
ADJOURNMI:NT
With no further business, the nleetinv, was adiourned at 8:45 p.m.
/
Melissa Meredith, Chair
Z__
Approved ?
2
