the Certificate of Appropriateness. The color scheme follows those of the 1950's and consists of
four colors, which will be used on the house, garage, workshop, pavilion and orchard house. The
building base color is library pewter, storms and doors Roycroft copper red, wood trim Roycroft
vellum and anything at brick level aurora brown. The roof of the orchard house will be replaced
with shingles to match those being removed. Mr. Schumann said the style and color of the
shingles don't have to be exact it can follow the color palette chosen and the style pattern
available the year the structure was built. Mr. Morse said to address ice/water issues on dormer
areas, the clay tiles will be removed, water shield underlayment will be added and tiles
reinstalled. Windows in the breakfast nook will be replaced and a low-e window film added to
single pane windows. Mr. Schumann said their effort to maintain original windows is
commendable however there are manufacturers that produce energy efficient windows which
emulate designs and styles of the original windows. The commission is more concerned the
style/pattern of window stays true to the original ones.
Mr. Morse said the front porch and brick planters will be reconstructed using one of the two
layouts shown in the packet. He noted that the northwest side porch is being added back as it
was removed in the 40's. The pavilion was altered in the 50's/60's adding wings which haven't
held-up. They would like to restore the pavilion to its original design; however, they have no
pictures of what two walls looked like and are not sure the current door or wall patterns are
original. The walkout basement area will be repaired or rebuilt including the retaining wall. The
only alteration will be to move the steps six inches further away from the basement door as the
step renders the door unusable. All concrete and brick work will be completed at the same time.
Tree removals and replacements will follow the plans submitted. He noted the city forester's
assistance in determining the value of the existing trees and those which should be removed or
added. The sidewalk entrance from Lorain Road has two flanking white pines which they would
like to preserve. Their intent is to remove the eight foot cement walkway between the pine trees
and Lorain sidewalk and replace it with an arch type bridge to ensure the root system of the pines
are not damaged any further. Their long-term prospect of installing solar panels and burying
power lines was briefly reviewed. They would like to return in sixty days to receive the
commission's approval.
Speaker Series
Bill Meixner event at Frostville; confirm date, topic and discuss promotion
Mr. Neville said the date to have Bill Meixner hold his presentation at Frostville will be
scheduled for late August and will be held on a Saturday during Farmers Market hours. The date
hasn't been set as Mr. Meixner's busy schedule has made it hard to finalize. He will try to have
a date prior to the July meeting and will have the clerk provide an update to Commission
members.
City documents for Frostville 1Vluseum
• Mayor's Court files 1930's
• NOMBL records
• Miscellaneous Landmarks files
2
