NEW BUSINESS
2014 Strategic Work Plan
Bill provided a 2014 calendar for the Commission to use in mapping out the year's events.
Sticky notes were used to identify meetings, city events and other community events that the
Commission may be a part of. Many events are scheduled for August which will require
significant advanced preparation.
Kim said that it is not too soon to start planning for the City's bicentennial in 2015. She said the
City will hope to brand the year in some way, tying together existing City events with new
events or events produced by community organizations. The 2015 issue of the North Olmsted
magazine can be part of the celebration. Members discussed including other groups in the
planning process, especially the Landmarks Commission and also the schools, the VFW, the
Olmsted Historical Society and Community Council. Some Arts Commission meetings could be
dedicated to joint planning for the bicentennial. Months that would be best given the
Commission workload are March, May, September, October and December.
Bill said in addition to events, the City Hall art gallery was a responsibility of the Commission
plus he wants to dig deeper into the issue of public art. The group embraced the idea of public
art and will further research how it can be incorporated into the public realm in North Olmsted.
Kim will explore and try to identify best practices used in other communities. Ideas ranging
from student competitions to a call for professional artists were shared. Before undertaking a
landmark type piece, the group might start on a smaller scale with a community mural or design
of bike racks that could be used in various locations.
The Commission would like to pursue the idea of a student competition for a community mural
to be completed in 2015 as part of the bicentennial. Members will start a list of possible
locations in the community where such a mural could be located.
ADJOURNMENT
With no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Bill Brake Kimberly Wenger
Chair Director of Planning & Development
Approved: 2 ? ? ?
