Reserve or Georgian style building so that is what they are working towards. Mr. Porter asked if
the Butternut School sign which was salvaged when the annex building was demolished would
be preserved and Mr. Henderson said yes.
Ms. Wenger said the presentation was a useful tool to understand the schedule of the school
district; however the commission is charged with preserving the community's history, by
overseeing improvements, additions, new construction or demolition within the historic district.
Two of the proposed buildings are significant historical structures in the city, one being the
original High School and one of the oldest homes in the City. The commission is concerned
about preserving the historical fabric of the district. Members would like to know how the
schools determined that preservation was not an option.
Mr. Henderson said TDA was not part of the analysis which determined the buildings were not
salvageable and needed to be demolished. The size of the new building and limitations of
working with an older structure in way of accommodating newer educational technology and
basic placement of the new building would be challenging. Mr. Smith said the Ohio Facilities
Commission is co-funding the project and they determined in the beginning it was no longer
feasible to be used as an educational facility. Their funds can only be used to build a new school.
The school district worked with a previous architectural firm to create a master plan which
concluded the best option to put in front of the voters was an entirely new facility and the
demolition of the existing structures. He noted that on September 21, 2015, TDA would be
presenting the unveiling of the new schools fagade. Mr. McDade said the state deemed the
middle school was in poor enough condition to qualify for new construction. The other
architectural firm ran the numbers of preserving or adding on to the existing structure verses
demolishing and building a new school which was less expensive. Due to the size of the new
building and the placement of the existing building it wasn't an ideal situation to try to keep the
building and work it into the new structure.
Mr. Schumann said the commission is not only responsible for reviewing demolition within the
historic district they also oversee new construction. The aesthetics of the new building will
ultimately be the responsibility of Landmarks. It is disappointing that there are no elevations
being presented to ensure the integrity of the landmarks district is being upheld or even taken
into consideration. Ms. Wenger said the proposal will be required to return for a certificate of
appropriateness for the new construction. Therefore at this time the commission is only
addressing COA's for demolition of the buildings. Mr. Henderson said they will be returning to
landmarks a few times and during their planning phase they were aware that the building is
located in the historic district. The commission is welcome to attend the unveiling to the board of
education on Wednesday to get a sense of the building style.
Mr. Limpert asked if there was any analysis available which substantiates there is nothing
salvageable externally or internally other than two interior doors and the exterior entrance. Mr.
Henderson said in addition to the front entrance they are looking at preserving bricks which
would be made available to the community. The two interior doors will be preserved and reused.
There's also been discussion regarding possibly salvaging the logo on the gym floor to reuse in
some way. Much of the building is a brick Romanesque style which is all brickwork and not a lot
of things which can be salvaged unlike the front entrance which is nice stonework. In the overall
2
