CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MAY 20, 2015
ROLL CALL
Chairman Brake called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. in Council's Caucus Room.
Present: Bill Brake, Lauren Suter, David Wahl, Jeff Campbell, Laura Simna, JoAnn DePolo
Absent: Annie Kilbane, Stephanie Procter, Sue Collander, Cailey Brake, Nicole McClain
Staff: Planning & Development Director Kim Wenger
OLD BUSINESS
Mayor's Art Show
The April 15t ecer ption went well, many students, family members and public attended the
event. Donated food from the Polaris Pastry Arts program was well received. JoAnn
recommended considering relocating the reception to her gallery in 2016 to create a better
atmosphere and encourage more public attendance. Pros would be showing art in a true gallery
setting and much greater flexibility with dates. Cons would be hanging the art twice and not
giving the students and families exposure to city hall.
PR/Publicity -
The mall barricade wall banners will go up in the next week or two. David was concerned that
the Commission wasn't involved in the final decision making of content and would have
suggested changes. Kim asked Commission members to let her know if there are areas where
they want to engage and she would ensure they are given the ability to provide input. Kim said
the first Lorain Road banner was installed but that the material and installation made it a safety
concern so it was removed. It will be relocated to a city facility. The second banner will be
printed on mesh so it will not be impacted by wind; it should be up by early June.
The group discussed print literature at length. Seasonal pieces will be produced in flyer and
poster formats. One mailing piece will be produced that focuses on summer events with a fall
events sidebar. Kim reviewed the pieces of inerchandise currently available or in production.
Lauren will also be designing a bicentennial themed t-shirt.
Kim said she would create a PR calendar to identify dates when information should be posted on
the website, emails sent through MailChimp, info put on the digital sign, or posts made on the
Facebook page. Event leaders should give dates to Kim for the calendar to ensure their event is
well publicized. Jeff recommended creating Facebook events for each event.
Fundraising
Kim reviewed new event sponsors for the Arts Showcase, Rec Center Birthday event, and Tree
Lighting. Bill said about $78 and $56 were raised from the Chick-fil-A and Bob Evans
fundraisers, respectively. Dining to donate for general bicentennial fundraising does not seem to
draw a large audience. Targeted fundraising seems to be a better approach.
