Ms. Meredith was opposed to the sign in the hazard triangle because it is a safety issue. She
believed it would be visible on the other side of the driveway of the east entrance, Mr. Papotto
and Ms. Sabo agreed. Mr. Papotto explained that the exact sign location is important to
determine visibility for drivers.
Ms. Meredith moved, seconded by Mr. Papotto, to grant the following variance as written
for 16-7407; Hampton Inn; 24601 Country Club Boulevard:
1. A variance for a monument sign located within the 35 ft. traffic hazard triangle; code
does not allow, applicant shows a sign installed within the triangle, Section 1163.17(a).
Motion denied 0-4.
16-7510; Ohio Beer Garden; 402 Great Northern Mall
Representatives: Lou Belknap, Agile Sign & Lighting, 35280 Lakeland Boulevard, Eastlake,
OH; Kristin Cala, General Manager of Great Northern Mall, 4954 Great Northern Mall, North
Olmsted, OH
Proposal consists of signage. The property is zoned General Retail Business.
The following variances are requested:
1. A variance permitting two canopy signs; code permits one, applicant shows two, Section
1163.29(a)
2. A 66.5 sq. ft. variance for total sign area permitted on a building; code permits 64 sq. ft.,
applicant shows 130.5 square feet, Section 1163.29(c)
3. A 40.4 sq. ft. variance for maximum canopy sign area; code permits 50 sq. ft., applicant
shows 90.4 square feet, Section 1163.29(c).
4. A variance for canopy sign height; code permits up to 4 feet in height, applicant shows two
signs at heights of 5.92 for Text Sign and 8.44 feet for Graphic Sign, Section 1163.29(c).
Mr. Aspery stated that the applicant is proposing to install new canopy signage on the existing
Ohio Beer Garden unit. Their proposal exceeds the allowable number of canopy signs by one
sign, canopy sign area by 40.4 square feet, canopy sign height by 1.92 feet and 4.44 feet, and
total allowable sign area permitted on a building by 66.5 square feet. Mr. Belknap stated that the
awnings were designed to add architectural value to the building. Since the building is set back
from the road, the tenant space needs to be emphasized to draw attention to the patio area. Mr.
Belknap did not realize the flag would be included in signage square footage. There will be no
backlit illumination, but rather the awnings would be lit by goose-neck lamps. The applicant
thought the different colored awnings would help differentiate it from the outdoor patio area. Ms.
Cala stated that the previous two tenants cited lack of visibility as the reason why their
businesses failed. Ms. Meredith agreed that signage is needed since the surrounding area is very
bland. The signage would highlight that an entrance is there with outdoor seating and the
requested signage is not unreasonable, Mr. Papotto and Mr. Raig agreed. Mr. Raig noted that the
way the building is positioned on the lot requires more signage to catch people's attention.
Ms. Meredith moved, seconded by Mr. Papotto, to grant the following variances as written
for 16-7510; Ohio Beer Garden; 402 Great Northern Mall:
1. A variance permitting two canopy signs; eode permits one, applicant shows two, Section
1163.29(a)
