LANDMARKS COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MINUTES FOR JUNE 12, 2017
ROLL CALL
Mr. Neville called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers.
Present: David Neville, Jim Morse, Duane Limpert, Gretchen Schuler, Paul Schumann
Absent: Jim Dubelko, Tom Dubowski
Staff: Planning Director Kim Wenger, Planner James Aspery, Administrative Assistant Nicole
Rambo-Ackerman
Mr. Schumann moved, seconded Mr. Morse, to excuse the absences of Mr. Dubelko and
Mr. Dubowski, motion passed 5-0.
REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ms. Schuler moved, seconded by Mr. Limpert, to approve the minutes of February 13,
2017 as written, motion passed 5-0.
NEW BUSINESS
Centennial Home Program
25961 Kennedy Ridge Road
Representative: Marge Lang, owner
Ms. Lang reviewed the history of her home and property. Mr. Eldred bought the land in 1869
which used to stretch up to Lorain Road. The barn on the property has been recognized as a
Landmark, with a built date of 1860. The current home is the third home on the property. The
first was built in 1876 and burned down in 1887. The second home was built and burned down in
1923. The third home, a four-square prairie home, was built in 1923 by Russell Eldred. It was
built on the foundation of the second home. Ms. Lang would like to have her home recognized
since it is one of the original properties on Kennedy Ridge. The applicant and her husband
bought the home from her parents and are the 8th owners of the property. A letter from Nelson
Eldred, dated October 14, 2012, states that the family lived in the chicken coop while the third
home was being built and the current garage was a corn crib. The Amelia Ames diary excerpt
describes the fire that burned the second home. The Eldreds needed to sell part of their property
in order to have enough money to build the third house. The second Eldred house was across the
street from the applicant's home currently, but the barn was existing. Mr. Neville believed there
may be enough information to identify the property as a Landmark. Mr. Limpert asked if there
were guidelines for an amount of a home that can qualify the age of the home. The original
sandstone foundation was changed to the red clay tile in 1887. Ms. Wenger pointed out that the
commission needs to decide whether a foundation counts as the home since this would set a
policy for the program. Mr. Morse believed the commission should focus more on recognizing
the home as a Landmark instead of continuing with the Centennial Home program. Ms. Wenger
