<br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTEI) <br />CULTURAL ACTIVITIES COIVI1VdISSION <br />HEI.D IN OLD TOWN HALL <br />AUGUST 3, 2005 <br />MINUTES <br />1. ROLL CALL: <br />Chairman Garland called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. <br />PRESENT: Chairman R. Garland, Commission members; B. Martindale, B. Brown, D. Frazier, and <br />G. Yustick. <br />ALSO PRESENT: Mr. David Wahl <br />II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES: <br />B. Martindale moved to approve the Cultural Activities Commission minutes dated July 6, 2005, as <br />written. B. Brown seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved. <br />III. NEW BUSINESS: <br />• Presentation by David & Renate Jakupca with the International Center for Environmental Arts. <br />(website: www.TheICEA.org) <br />Mr. Jakupca reviewed that he had been representing the environmental arts since 1987 and the center <br />originated in Canada. After 3 or 4 years they returned to Cleveland were they are from. Their <br />mission statement is to assist an understanding the relationships between humans and the <br />environment through the arts. They use their art as an instrument for social change and their claim to <br />fame is working with the United Nations in the early 90's for the Earth Summit in Rio De Janeiro and <br />the World Conference on Human Rights. They recycled the entire conference to Cleveland and was <br />set up in the Martin Luther King Library but unfortunately was pulled. The Cultural Activities <br />Commission was shown awards the center has received internationally. In June of 2005 at a piece <br />conference the center received the Italian Metal of Arts award. They are authors of the book Saving <br />the Shore Line and have a staff of about six people two of which are part-time and the rest are <br />volunteers. Mrs. Brown questioned if the center worked with school children. Mrs. Jakupca <br />reviewed that one of their projects is a coast sweep project whereby children are asked to draw their <br />interpretation of water and the environment such as Lake Erie and one of those exhibits was displayed <br />at the living lakes eachibit in Hanover Germany. The commission thanked Mr. & Mrs. Jakupca for <br />their presentation and asked that they keep in touch with the commission. <br />Mrs. Brown reviewed that a film presentation was just completed dealing with transforming the North <br />Olmsted Middle School into an Art Center for housing all forms of art presentations. Currently the <br />Cultural Activities Commission is working on having art booths at the 2006 Homecoming to <br />showcase local artists. They also hope to eventually breakaway from Homecoming and have an arts <br />festival for local artists. She suggested that the center participate in the 2006 Homecoming to <br />introduce them selves to the general public. <br />N. OLD BUSINESS: <br />• Review of Dover Player's performance of "Hound of the Baskervilles". <br />Mrs. Martindale reviewed that the play went extremely well and had good attendance. There was a <br />total of $l, 216. 00 dollars in the donation jar. Dover Players are signed up for another play and the <br />dates of the auditions will be August 13`h and 14 `h and there will be two one acts performed. The
