? CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
LANDMARKS CONIMISSION
OLD TOWN HALL
MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2005
MINUTES
I. ROLL CALL:
Chairman Lang called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.
PRESENT: Chairman J. Lang, Commissioners; M. Davis, B. Lord, P. Barker, T. Schock, and L.
Thogmartin. ABSENT: D. Rerko, P. Schumann and R. Bohlmann
II. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES:
P. Barker moved to approve the November 14, 2005 Landmarks minutes as written. L.
Thogmartin seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
III. RECEPTION OF VISITORS:
SITES Student Drew Tedick, Mr. Sapienzt for Mr. Downer and Mrs. Eian.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. William Downer; 25755 Butternut Ridge Road:
Proposal consists of a request for a letter of appropriateness for new roof shingles.
Mr. Sapienzt was present on behalf of the owner to request new roof shingles. The home is
brown looking sandstone with a large fireplace. The existing color of shingles on the roof is
canyon red shingles and does not go with the homes color. His client would like to change the
color to a brown to match the brick work of the home. The style would be the same three in one
tab shingle with a 25-year warranty and includes all new flashing, ice gua.rd, 30 pound felt,
ridge vents and new ventilation. He believes that the home was built in the 40's and is a single
story ranch. Two layers of roofs will be removed. He is not sure how many roofs have been on
the home. Mr. Lang said the only reason the issue could not be addressed under minor change
was due to the color change.
Mr. Lang reviewed that he received a minor change request for the Downer home for a
Handicap ramp which he in fact approved. However the layout of the ramp showed nothing to
buffer the ramp from view. Therefore he requested that plants be used to buffer the massiveness
of the ramp. Mr. Sapienzt said Mr. Downer signed a letter for the Building Department saying
that no later than May 15, 2006 he would plant shrubs to buffer the ramp. The existing shrubs
would remain except two near the top of the ramp which need to be removed for the ramp. The
ramp will not be directly over the sidewalk due to the layout of the top of the ramp.
B. Lord moved to grant a letter of appropriateness to 25755 Butternut Ridge Road for
replacing the existing shingles with new three in one tab shingles Bark-Brown, Owens
Corning 25-year fiberglass. M. Davis seconded the motion which was unanimously
approved.
Mr. Lang introduced Ms. Eian who was present to discuss the David Johnson Stearns home.
Ms. Eian stated that the home was the oldest home within the city and she would like to see her
home moved to the Frostville Museum. Mr. Lang advised that the decision as to whether or not
the home is saved is an administrative matter. Currently there are no city funds established for
salvage type work on historical homes of interest. The Historical Society has indicated that they
were interested in the original part of the home. Ms. Eian indicated that the original home was
