there were four layers of shingles on the roof to remove and he chose a three tab shaded
black color. Mr. Rerko advised that the owner should make sure there are in fact four layers
as the rim of the home may be the only section which has 4 layers not the entire roof.
P. Schumann moved to grant Matt Palmer of 25800 Butternut Ridge Road a letter of
appropriateness for using Ovvens three tab shingles. M. Davis seconded the motion
which was unanimously approved.
2. IVIr. & Mrs. Davis; 25912 Butternut Ridlze Road:
Proposal consists of a request for a letter of appropriateness for new roof shingles.
Mr. Lang reviewed that Mrs. Davis requested the board allow her to replace her existing
shingles with a 40-year Landmark Series, three dimensional shingle. However, due to
possible structural damage caused by the faulting roof an emergency permit was issued to
Mrs. Davis by the Building Department therefore the issue was. mute. Mr. O'Malley
advised that as the application was on the docket it should be addressed even though the
permit was issued. If the commission feels that the shingles chosen are appropriate a
certificate should be issued.
T. Schock moved to grant a certificate of appropriateness for Maryellen Davis of 25912
Butternut Ridge itoad for using Landmarks Series three dimensional shingles with like
color. P. Schumann seconded the motion which was unanimously approved. Note:
Mrs. Davis abstained from discussion and voting.
Mr. Lang suggested that due to the fact that both Mr. Palmer and Mrs. Davis were
requesting almost the identical shingles and even if the two homes vary in age; Davis home
1930's and Palmer home 1940's the question is weather or not it is appropriate for
Landmarlcs to use a minor change to facilitate a re-roofing of a home particularly within the
historical district. Currently the Building Department must refer any change of color or
style of shingle thaf is not the exact as what is being replaced to Landmarks for a letter of
appropriateness. Historically there are a lot of homes that when the first and second time
owners replaced their roofs shaker and standard seam may have been varied from or may
not have been available by the third re-roof. Now there is a product available in keeping
with the construction date of homes. He would like the commission to discuss allowing
homeowners the right to in fact re-roof with the products available today that would match
the age and style of the home. Mrs. Davis believed that the three dimensional shingles now
available more accurately replicates the shaker shingle originally found on a lot of the
homes in the historical district. Mr. Lang asked members if they were aware of specific
products available today that would match roof styles of the 30's, 40's, 50' and 60's and
weather or not they would satisfy building department requirements.
Mr. Schumann believed that in the 30's, 40's and 50's they only had three tab shingles
available. Three dimensional shingles now available and used are because they do closely
represent the old shaker and slate style shingles and last longer i.e. warranty and life of
product. Even new homes use the dimensional style shingles. However, he felt it would be
a mistake to do a blanket approval of any homeowner wanting to use three dimensional
shingles as there was a wide variety of colors and styles on the market.
2
