beams are all notched out. There are small additions on the home; front porch, side
sunroom, and the rear kitchen addition. Mr. Schock apologized to the Mayor for the wrong
photos he received prior to their last meeting and showed the Mayor accurate photos of the
home. Mr. Schumann indicated that the home is a 1%z story but not sure of the exact
building style. The Mayor indicated that it was his understanding that there were no funds
donated or available to move the home and as he discussed in their prior meeting he will be
meeting with the metroparks to discuss sharing a driveway and would discuss the Stearns
home with them. He asked if the commission had any information on the carriage house
that might help him find interest in it. Mr. Schumann discussed the possibility of the
historical society being allowed to enter the home prior to demolition to see if they could
salvage items. The Mayor advised the commission that if they were going to try to save the
home or carriage house they would have to act right away and suggested that they work with
the Planning Director directly. Mr. Schock questioned if thought had been given to offering
a section of the firehouse parcel/land in exchange for them moving the original home and
carriage house to the museum. The Mayor briefly discussed the intention of sharing a drive
with the metroparks at the site and the benefits of a shared drive. Mr. Lang suggested that
since there was such little time to raise money to save the home or carriage house, would it
be possible to just move either structure to the back of the lot until it could be moved to the
metroparks later. The Mayor suggested that although that was a possibility only it funds
were donated, he wanted the commission to know that he would do what he could to
preserve as much of the history of the site as he could. The commission felt that as the
carriage house had no foundation it would move easily. The Mayor indicated that the
ground breaking would take place as soon as weather permitted. The commission briefly
discussed with the Mayor the possibility of flagging older structures within the City so when
a permit is pulled the commission would be notified.
Mr. Schumann advised that he had spoken to Christ the King Church and they have given
him a key to the house and advised the Historical Society that they are welcome to take any
items from the home worth saving. He suggested that their intent is to try to save as much
lumber as possible from the home as there were a lot of structural materials worth saving.
He noted that some of the hinges on the interior doors have the old stamped hinges which go
back some time but the home style looks to be of the 1920's, craftsmen style so it is hard to
tell the exact date of the home. The home is the Charles home and the upper cabinets in the
kitchen are 1920's birch but the lower cabinets were replacements. The schoolhouse seems
to have disappeared in the 1870's and then a house shows up on the maps. There has been
talk that the schoolhouse was used in the construction of the home as well as stories that the
church was used in the construction of a different home along Barton Road. Therefore,
trying to date the home will be difficult.
Mr. Schumann advised that the Historical Society fees might be increasing and reviewed
things going on within their newsletter. He advised that the Historical Society was
becoming a Corporate Organization or sponsor. There will be a directors meeting January
12, 2006 and then a regular monthly meeting on January 15, 2006. He announced that there
was a$10,000 donation to the church in December, which worked out well as funds were
running low. Mr. Schock reviewed the commissions December visit with Mrs. Eian as Mr.
Schumann was absent. Mr. Schumann advised that it would be very expensive to move the
home or carriage house to the museum or just to the back of the lot.
VI. OLD BUSINESS:
2
