Includes 3 wall signs and 2 canopy signs.
#2. Temporary signs to be displayed after the installation of permanent signs, until the national
unveiling of new signs.
Mr. Behra with Boyer Signs came forward to be sworn in and review the request. Mr. Behra
advised that the owner of Kaufmann's was changing the name of their stores to Macy's. His client
would like to place the Macy's signs on the building by July and then place temporary tarp/cloth
Kaufmann signs over the permanent signs until September when they have their national unveiling.
He advised that his clients were quite surprised when they were told that they would need to reapply
for variances as the only thing changing is the name not owner or use. As the store is one of the
malls anchor stores they feel they need more visibility. Board members questioned if the new signs
were larger than the existing Kaufmann signs. Mr. Behra reviewed that each letter of the existing
Kaufmann's signs were 5-foot. Each of the new Macy's letters will be 5'.3". However, due to the
"y" and the comma over the y the height is 8'6 3/8". Mr. Rymarczyk requested that the applicant
disclose the exact timeframe they are requesting to have the temporary signs over the permanent
signs. Board members felt that the amount of variances and size of variances being requested were
substantial. Although the width of the sign was smaller than the existing signs the height requested
was larger. The commission was sympathetic to the building location being setbaclc so far from the
street and that they are in fact an anchor store but their request was unreasonable. The applicant was
aslced to decrease the size of the signs being requested. Mr. Behra advised that he was not
authorized to agree to smaller signs. The board advised the applicant that the case would be tabled
and that the requests were to be decreased and that either the landlord or owner should be present at
3
