.?
CITY OF NOIZTH OLMSTED
PLANNIleTG & DESIGN COMMISSION MEETING
COUNCIL CHAMBERS
WEDNESDAY, MAY 23, 2007
MINUTES
I. CAUCUS:
7:15 pm
II. ROLL CALL:
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm.
PRESENT: J. Lasko Jr., R. Bohlmann, G. Malone, M. Mahoney, M. Meredith, D. Rerko, J.
Cotner
ALSO PRESENT: Planning Director K. Wenger, Asst Law Director B. O'Malley, Buil'ding
Commissioner D. Conway, City Engineer D. Collins and Clerk of Commissions D. Rote.
III. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES:
IV. OLD BiJ5INESS:
1. N. O. Town Center 24954 Brookpark Rd BLDG D: (WRD 4)
Proposal consists of a sign package for building D. Note: Variances are required. PDC tabled
03/28/07 & 04/25/07, applicant withdrew 04/11/07.
Ms. Wenger reported that the documents received did not address the commissions concerns.
References to directional signs were not removed from the sign criteria nor were the south faOde
signs addressed on the elevation plans to be more proportional to the design of the building. She
noted that a wall sign on the east elevation was not accounted for on the applicant's legend.
Mr. O'Malley said the Commission should address each variance being sought as the BZA
would loolc for the Commission's recommendations. ,
Russ Kalina with Adams Signs and David Taft with Carnegie Management were both present to
address the request. Mr. Kalina presented new elevations for the members to share and view.
The plan addressed how the signs would fit the south elevation. Signs D-4, D-11, D-13, D14,
and D-28 were decreased in size to architecturally fit the south elevation better. A number of 3
foot signs were reduced to 2 foot 6 inches along the south elevation and no changes have been
made to the north wall. No signs will be illuminated along the north elevation.
Mr. Rerko believed that sign D-1 was still oversized and D-5 still exceeded the relief of the
building. Mr. Taft said the sign band would stand away from the building where D-5 is located.
Mr. Rerko did not feel any signs should be extended outward away from the building. Signs D-8
& D-11 placement should be centered on their sign band. Signs D-1 D-13 & D-14 should be 2
foot 6 inches high only. Mr. Kalina advised that he had already reduced the sizes of some of the
signs mentioned. Ms. Wenger expressed concern that new elevations were presented at the
meeting. There were not enough plans for everyone and the changes made alter the variances
required which places the commissioners and staff in an awkward position to comment on the
proposal. Ms. Wenger said during submission, the applicant had indicated no changes were
being proposed since the previous meeting. Now the commission is being asked to make
recommendations on variances which have changed. Mr. O'Malley reviewed that the BZA
would be addressing practical difficulty of the sign plan for the site. He agreed with the planner
