Also in 2008 the Landmarks Commission began an inquiry into transferring some of the artifacts
and documents stored in the City's archives to the Olmsted Historical Society where they could
be used for educational purposes. Due to the State of Ohio records retention laws this process is
more involved than the members of the Commission had originally thought. However, since
initiating the inquiry we have gained some knowledge into the mechanics of the process and look
forward to this transfer and future transfers for the better understanding of our community's
history.
Certified Local Government Application
After several starts and stops in previous years, the Commission has begun a serious effort to
complete and submit an application to the Ohio Historical Society for Certified Local
Government (CLG) status. This status would enable the City to pursue grant money for historic
preservation projects along with other benefits for the community. In previous years the ground
work for the CLG was begun including a change to the City Charter requiring the Commission to
include certain professionals in historic and architectural fields. The Commission intends to
complete this application by early 2009.
GOALS FOR 2009
The Commission has ambitious goals for 2009. These include the completion and submittal of
the Certified Local Governments application, raising funds to place an Ohio Historic Marker at
Frostville, creating a speakers program to help educate the Commission and interested members
of the community, cataloging a list of potential landmarks and eligible properties for historic
recognition plaques, a comprehensive review of the current historic inventory, and continuing the
Commission's current responsibilities. ft
