North Olmsted High School SITES Program
The Landmarks Commission is proud to be a member of the Social
Involvement Through Education and Service (SITES) Program at North
Olmsted High School. For the past four years the Commission has
mentored one or more senior high school students each semester. These
students are put to work on Landmarks projects or tasks at Frostville
Museum. Working with various community groups, in 2007 the
Commission began a Living History Project in partnership with the SITES
program. In 2008 the AARP awarded a grant of $10,000 to the SITES
teachers to continue this program in which older community members are
interviewed and videotaped to preserve their stories and for the posterity of our community.
In addition, members of the Commission lecture to several local history and American
architectural history classes each year at the High School. Members of the Commission have
also addressed the North Olmsted High School Key Club in order to garner monetary support for
Landmark projects.
2008 PROJECTS
Streetscape Banners
Working through the Planning Department and in cooperation with the Cultural Activities
Commission and the Olmsted Historical Society, the Landmarks Commission installed ten
double-sided streetscape banners on utility poles on five busy roadways around North Olmsted.
One of the banners at each location promoted the Frostville Museum, which includes a picture of
the Frostville Village Church. The other banners promoted the Juried Art Show, an annual event
that began three years ago. Sponsored by the Kiwanis of North Olmsted and with the support of
the Cultural Activities Commission, this event is held at Frostville Museum. The purchase of
additional banners is planned for placement at additional locations and to advertise other events
both at Frostville and elsewhere around North Olmsted.
Historic Artifacts
In 2008 the Olmsted Historical Society built an
archivists' room at Frostville for the protection of
records, documents, photos and items of other
historical interest. This insulated,
environmentally controlled room is equipped with
smoke and burglary alarms and is protected by the
North Olmsted Fire and Police Departments and
the Metroparks Rangers. Amid the archives are
early North Olmsted family histories, North
Olmsted historical items and documents.
?~;`? '
