LANDMARKS COMMISSION
CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED
MEETING MINUTES FOR NOVEMBER 10, 2008
ROLL CALL
Mr. Schumann called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. in Council Chambers and Mr. Dubowski
led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Present: Paul Schumann, Thomas Schock, Tom Dubowski, Dale Thomas, Larry Orlowski
Absent: Donald Rerko, Maryellen Davis, Jeff Herwick, John Lasko
Also Present: Phil Tomko, SITES Student
Staff: Secretary Tricia Granfors
REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF MINUTES
Mr. Schock moved, seconded by Mr. Orlowski, to approve the September 8, 2008 minutes,
with changes, which was unanimously approved.
Without a quorum of those present at the meeting to approve the October 13, 2008 minutes, they
will be held to the December meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
Request for Historic Recognition Plaque: Jane Palumbo, 25684 Kennedy Ridge Road, PPN
236-13-013, requesting historic recognition for house based on age and history. (Tabled at
October 13, 2008 meeting)
Mr. Schumann reported that several attempts have been made to reach Ms. Palumbo with no
response. Additional information is needed from her on stories she has mentioned and evidence
on the age of the home. Ms. Palumbo stated the home was built in the 1820's and cited physical
evidence, although no specifics were submitted. Records of a survey performed in the 1980's by
Steve McQuillen states the age of the home as 1840. Mr. Schutnann shared results of his
research on the style of the house. He found a similar house design called "Simplified Greek
Revival" that began to be incorporated after the war of 1812 and is appropriate for structures
anytime after 1820. Also known as "New Greece," referring to the United States as the only
democracy in the world at the time, Greek Revival includes a low swept roof and porticos with
gables and columns. Due to the addition of vinyl siding, not all the elements can be seen on Ms.
Palumbo's house. A house at Frostville, the Frostville Village Church, the Briggs house, the
Martindale house, and the new library are all examples of this style, which is still being used
today. Mr. Schumann made the book and pictures available for viewing by the commission
members. Mr. Orlowski will contact Ms. Palumbo.
Mr. Dubowski moved, seconded by Mr. Orlowski, to table Ms. Palumbo's request for a
historic recognition plaque for 25684 Kennedy Ridge Road until the December meeting
pending additional information, which was unanimously approved.
