Landmarks Commission Annual Report
Mr. Schumann has submitted to Secretary Granfors a rough draft of language to be incorporated
into the annual report. The Certified Local Government application requires an annual report.
Answers to CLG application questions will also refer to the report.
Website Link (Update)
An official request for the City of North Olmsted to add a link to the Olmsted Historical Society
has not yet been submitted.
Certified Local Government Application
The CLG Subcommittee (Mr. Thomas, Mr. Schock and Mr. Schumann) met on Monday,
November 3, 2008, and worked through a significant number of application questions. Mr.
Schock's experience in working with these types of applications has been helpful. The
submission will be kept as simple as possible. The application requires a historic preservation
plan. A partial draft written several years ago is being reviewed and completed. Section titles of
the plan may include an introduction, background on the commission, a process for strategic
planning, a summary of past and current preservation efforts, past surveys, current programs and
projects, and future goals and objectives. Mr. Schumann welcomes other commission members
to malce suggestions. Secretary Granfors will forward an e-mail to all commission members
listing these section titles along with the historic preservation plan partial draft. The next CLG
Subcommittee meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 17, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.
NEW BUSINESS
SITES Second Semester Proiect - Cemetery Imurovement Proiect
Mr. Schumann introduced SITES Student Phil Tomko. Phil explained the SITES students were
asked to develop and complete a community service project. Initially, Phil would like to clean
up (e.g. pick up trash, weed, lawn maintenance) Coe Ridge and Butternut Ridge Cemeteries.
After that work is complete he would like to find ways to build new or replace old fencing,
repair, replace or add headstones, and possibly install a kiosk or some type of information center
at both cemeteries that would communicate relevant history and information on the cemeteries to
visitors. The Peake family, recently honored with a historic marker, has no headstones at their
graves. Mr. Thomas shared the results of his research on the Peake family graves. The area was
confirmed through City cemetery records for the family. All the surrounding graves have stones;
this area is only grass. Some type of maxker could be placed; however, it is not clear George
Peake is buried there. Concerning the funding, Mr. Schumann suggested the Olmsted Historical
Society or Wal-Mart. Phil's idea is to create a cemetery program that continues beyond this
semester or school year and he asks for the support of the Landmarks Commission. Phil has
worked with the Building Department to organize the cemetery records but has not yet discussed
his project ideas with the Service Director. Mr. Schumann invites Phil to attend future meetings
to update the commission on the project and invites him to continue his SITES work with the
Landmarks Commission in the next semester. He also aslcs that Phil speak to the Olmsted
