Fs•oin the Deslt of : Paul R. Barker, Councilman lNarcd 2
23629 Carriage Lane, North Olmsted, OH 44070
440.734.1097 / CityGuy44070@aol.com
Ms. Kiin Wenger, AICP, Director, Dept. of Planning, 23, August, 2008
Dear Ms. Wenger,
I would aslc this letter be forwarded to Mr. John Laslco, Chairman of the Planning and Design
Commission to be read while discussion regarding the Save-A-Lot and Goodwill presentation is talcing
place.
Dear Chairman Laslco and Planning and Design members;
On your agenda for the Planning and Design Commission August 27, 2008 COMS08-02 Save-A-Lot &
Goodwill located at 23000 Lorain Rd. is scheduled for review. Due to a family commitment I am unable
to attend this evenings meeting. I am interested in this meeting for two reasons. I represent Ward 2 and I
am Chairman of the BZD Council Committee and this project will be on my agenda soon for Council's
approval.
During the last Planning and Design Save-A-Lot was on the agenda but Goodwill became the main topic.
I had concerns as did some members of the Commission as to how and where items would be dropped
off. It was also noted that a door opening had been cut without Building Dept. approval. I understand that
issue has been discussed and some coinpromises have been agreed upon. I also understand that the
Goodwill organization that we are dealing with now and hopefully in the future is much more in tune with
our concerns than the other Goodwill that operated in the two previous locations in North Olmsted
Based on my conversations with Ms. Kim Wenger our Planning Director, Dr. Lisa Thomas our Safety
Director, Mr. Charles Rini Jr, owner of the building and Mary Moriarty, Goodwill's Vice President of
Retail Operations, I am comfortable that with the seven day a weelc operation and the video surveillance. I
do not think we will encounter problems with items being dropped off at inconvenient times or the area
not being lcept tidy.
I would aslc that the Planning and Design Commission please approve the changes that were made
previously to the front of the building. The two handicapped spaces at the loading area should be removed
so that people in their vehicle's dropping items off can pull up with ease. I thinlc the door in any other
location would be a safety hazard and it could give people the opportunity to talce advantage of
"dumping" items in an area that wouldn't be seen as easy as the front location. Goodwill is a valuable
asset to the City of North Olmsted and I welcome thein to their new location in Ward 2.
I appreciate the time given for me to address this issue.
Sincerely,
Paul R. Barker
Ward 2 Councilman and
Chair of the BZD Committee of Council
10
