name is only 5'6" high and the spark is 8 feet tall. The existing monument sign will remain just
the lettering will be replaced. All letters will be internally illuminated and no exterior lighting
will be on the building other than lights required by code. The current sign is 5' high by 38'
wide and the new sign will be 8' high by 287" wide most of which is filler space created by the
logo. Ms. Rudolph questioned if the new logo was required to be included in the Walmart sign
and Mr. Sullivan said yes it is their national logo which is becoming their trademark. The 5' 6"
inch letters with the 8 foot logo is the standard size sign for Walmart. He said that out of the 198
square feet being requested over 80 square feet is not signage it is just open space. The Walmart
sign alone is 157 square feet and the spark alone is 57 square feet and the entrance area only
alone is 225 feet wide. Mr. Sullivan noted that the proposed W and L were the only letters to be
5 ft 6 inches tall and the current sign has a115 foot tall letters so the proposed Walmart wording
will be smaller than what is currently on the building, it is only the spark which is 8 feet tall.
Mrs. Diver asked if the spark could be reduced to 5 feet and Mr. Sullivan said the size and design
of the new corporate sign is a standard size and the overall width and appearance of the new sign
is smaller with less impact than the existing sign. Mr. Mitchell noted that Walmart had worked
with the city in improving their landscaping beds, installing brick bollards and addressing other
site issues. As the proposed letters are smaller than the existing letters and the majority of the
variance is created by the spark he does not object to the variances requested.
Mrs. Bellido said the sign is an improvement from what is currently at the site and the new
design aesthetically fits the building. Ms. Rudolph said although the letters are only 6 inch
higher she is concerned the height is being increased. However the setback from the road is
significant the sign will face into the parking lot and the change is not significant from what is
currently in place. Mrs. Diver said that although she likes the appearance a 198 square foot
vaxiance is substantial and she would like to see the logo decreased to 5 foot 6 inches to match
the height of the lettering. Mrs. Sergi said consideration should be given for the frontage which
is over 500 feet wide and the setback which is over 100 feet from the right of way therefore she
did not object to the request.
Mrs. Sergi moved, seconded by Ms. Rudolph, to grant CMS09-12 Walmart of 24801
Brookpark Road the following variances: 1. a 4 foot variance for a wall sign higher than
allowed; code permits 4 ft, applicant shows 8 ft. 2. a 198 square foot variance for a wall
sign larger than allowed; code permits 100 sq ft, applicant shows 298 sq ft both of which
are in violation of Ord. 90-125 section,1163.28c. Roll call: Bellido, Sergi, Rudolph - yes,
Diver - no. Variances granted 3-1.
5 Guvs Burgers; 26037 Lorain Road
Request for variance (1123.12). Proposal consists of signage and the following variances are
required:
1. A 24.95 square foot variance for total wall signs on a unit; code permits 56 sq ft, applicant
shows 80.95 sq ft section 1163.25 c.
2. A variance for 2 additional wall signs on a unit; code permits 1, applicant shows 3 section
1163.28 a.
3. A variance for an additional ground sign on a lot; code permits 1, applicant shows 3 section
1163.27 a.
