Mr. Matson said yes, some windows also appear to be original. The board understands the
historic significance and wants to work with the community. Mr. Schumann said records
indicate the house was built in 1854 of the vernacular style and is historically valuable.
Mr. Schumann opened public comment. Ms. Donna Draudt of 4279 Fall Lake Drive, Avon
addressed the Commission. Although she is no longer a resident of North Olmsted, she lived in
the house 70 years ago when it was part of 30 acres. She remembers the barn and the corn field
where the library building stands and the grape vines in the area of the football field. She and
her brothers have many memories of the home and would hate to see it destroyed. She and her
brothers would be pleased if the house could be moved to Frostville.
Mr. O'Malley recommended the Board of Education be asked to concur with the motion to table.
Mr. Schumann asked Mr. Matson if he would be agreeable to tabling the COA request pending
discussions between the BOE and the Olmsted Historical Society. Mr. Matson agreed; he will
advise the board members. According to public meeting requirements Mr. O'Malley
recommended only a representative of Landmarks meet with the BOE to avoid a quorum of the
commission. Director Wenger recommends that the motion to table would mention the effort to
work together towards relocation and if demolition were to occur a detailed development plan
should be submitted. Mr. Matson will update the COA to include the garage and shed.
Ms. Davis moved, seconded by Mr. Orlowski, to table the North Olmsted City Schools
Certificate of Appropriateness request to demolish the existing house at 27501 Butternut
Ridge Road until the September 14, 2009 Landmark Commission meeting subject to
discussions between the Board of Education and the Olmsted Historical Society on other
options, the submittal of a comprehensive redevelopment plan, and the revision of the COA
to include the garage and shed, which was unanimously approved.
North Olmsted Citv Schools; 27253 Butternut Ridge Road, PPN 235-16-008:
A request for a Certificate of Appropriateness to demolish the existing building.
Mr. Schumann circulated a photo of the annex building from the Olmsted Historical Society
archives taken in 1952. The building has been greatly altered over the years. Due to the unsafe
condition, the front steps were removed in 1993. Mr. Matson said if the building is demolished
the board intends to have the metal walkway removed and restore the Middle School fagade.
The master plan calls for the demolition of the annex building, the addition of parking, the
elimination of one of the driveways from Butternut Ridge, the removal of existing fencing and
overgrowth, the installation of new privacy fencing to benefit their neighbors, the installation of
fencing to protect the recreation facilities, and the installation of new landscaping, all to create a
campus and park-like environment. The demolition of the Annex will give the board flexibility
for redevelopment, such as construction of a new high school or middle school. Additional
parking will also reduce traffic congestion. Mr. Schumann is pleased the board intends to restore
the Middle School fagade. Built in the 1930's depression era, it has historic significance.
The Annex was built in 1910 and an addition was constructed in 1949. Since then a number of
modifications have been made. Originally the building was heated by a cold fire boiler, which
was removed around 1957. The system was then spliced into the Middle School hot water heat
