Centennial of the Villaize of North Olmsted and City Schools
Mr. Schumann will be meeting with Vera Brewer to continue work on the City Schools
centennial displays. Ms. Wenger noted that the event is six weeks away and we need to
complete preparations. Homecoming is August 27-30. The City will have use of the big tent
Friday evening for a cake and ice cream social. A display of some kind will be prepared and
Dale Thomas will speak. The City school event is on Thursday, the Taste of North Olmsted
event is scheduled for Saturday, and on Sunday a Chamber of Commerce event will take place.
Mr. Thomas located pictures for the school centennial posters. Ms. Wenger is considering
various ways of presenting historic City photos on a minimal budget. Depending on lighting and
space considerations, a PowerPoint presentation may be created. The Olmsted Historical Society
will assist by providing photos, slides and information as needed.
Second 8009 Landmarks Commission Speaker Eeent
Mr. Schumann reported a second speaker is still being sought. Mr. Schock will contact Steve
McQuillen to ask if he would consider speaking on a historic preservation topic, perhaps his
experience of cataloging historic properties in North Olmsted. While at the gravestone
restoration workshop this weekend Ms. Wenger will also seelc a speaker for the Landmarks
Commission. Mr. Schumann said the Olmsted Historical Society board voted to fund the cost of
the workshop for OHS members, but does not know if any members requested the funding.
NEW BUSINESS
Certified Local Government Grants
Mr. Schumann reviewed the latest CLG newsletter, The Network; he felt it provided useful
information. Ms. Wenger introduced a list of the types of grants offered through to CLG
communities; survey, registration, planning, pre-development, development, acquisition, and
education (and other). The grant applications are released at the end of year and are due in
March. Per Mr. Harper, new CLG cities receive priority concerning grants. In preparation for
the application period, the Landmarks Commission needs to determine the types of grants for
which to apply. Ms. Wenger recommends each commission member read the list of grant
categories, create a list of project ideas, and discuss the ideas in so far as which would score best,
which ones are urgent, and how to come up with the matching 30% funding. Past grant awards
were between $8,000 and $40,000 dollars. Ms. Wenger received a request by Mr. Harper for a
200-400 word article on the City of North Olmsted and the Landmarks Commission to be
published in the October-November CLG newsletter. She will begin a draft but requests input on
content from the commissioners.
Certificate of Apnropriateness Aunlications bv North Olmsted City Schools
Mr. Schumann indicated the Landmarks Commission would be reviewing two certificates of
appropriateness requests from the North Olmsted City Schools at the August 10 meeting. The
request is to demolish the Caster/Lincoln house at 27253 Butternut Ridge Road and the Middle
School Annex building at 27501 Butternut Ridge Road. The Anuex building is leaking and has
