cost was partially covered by donations. It is a difficult matter for a city to ask for a bid for
professional service while asking for the services to be donated.
Mr. Lasko recommended requesting the SITES coordinators assign additional students to the
Planning Department for this project. Ms. Wenger agreed that both SITES students, Phil Tomko
in initiating tlie project, and Emily iJhlik taking over effort, did a great deal of work. She will
have a SITES student assigned to the Planning Department in the next year. Mr. Lasko said it is
likely the SITES coordinators would be willing to assign more than one student and would also
be interested in coordinating a large work event to benefit the cemeteries. A change was made in
the SITES program this past spring. The program called for students to participate in service
trips to the Appalachia region. This year they were given a choice between a trip to Appalachia
or participating in urban-related, local activities. The cemetery improvements could easily be
dove-tailed into the urban-outreach SITES program and would not need to wait until spring. The
SITES faculty would welcome the additional opportunity and could make it an option to all the
SITES students. Ms. Wenger said perhaps the Cemetery Committee or Landmarks Commission
can help craft a fundraising idea incorporating the SITES students at Frostville. The program
would benefit the students and Frostville as well as the cemetery project.
Ms. Chris Gerrett introduced herself. Although currently in the engineering field, she would like
to work with cemetery records and restoration in the future. She read about the cemetery
improvement project in the newspaper. Chris has worked on behalf of the Rockport Cemetery in
Fairview Park including the transcription of headstones; taking photographs, developing a
database of records, and creating site drawings in AutoCAD. She is interested in headstone.
repair techniques and would like to register for the cemetery restoration workshop. She has seen
cemeteries around Ohio place new stones in front of damaged stones. In her experience she feels
the most severe damage made to headstones is done by the groundskeepers. Although she is a
City of Fairview Paxk resident, Chris would like to participate on the Cemetery Improvement
Committee. She feels that sharing resources benefits everyone.
Manle School Fourth Grade Tour, Mav 22, 2009
Mr. Thomas enjoyed participating as a presenter in the tour. Having taught many years at high
school level, he is amazed at the enthusiasm of younger students and their unexpected questions.
Cleveland Restoration Societv Membership
Mr. Schumann reported that the Olmsted Historical Society will join the Cleveland Restoration
Society as a member and has agreed to include the Landmarks Commission in this membership
by allowing the Landmarks Commission free membership in the Olmsted Historical Society.
Centennial of the Village of North Olmsted and Citv Schools
The Olmsted Historical Society has agreed to help the schools with their centennial celebration
by funding the printing of historic photos onto PVC posters for use in the big tent at
Homecoming. The OHS will also loan them historic school bells and give them two yarn
pictures. One yarn picture is of Coe Ridge School; the other is of the first one-room, log cabin
