CMS10-33: GetGo Fuel Station; 27264 Lorain Road
Request for variance. Proposal consists of signage; the following variances are requested:
l. A variance for four (2) additional canopy signs; code permits two (2), applicant shows
four (4), section 1163.29(a).
2. A variance for additional4" in projection from the face of the canopy; code allows 2" and
the applicant shows 6", signs C, D, D(3), section 1163.29(b).
Mr. Majeed of MCG Architecture and Mr. Belknap of the sign company were sworn in. Mr.
Majeed said a sign was eliminated so there are only five canopy signs. He reviewed each of the
GetGo signs and the digital fuel price sign. Board members aslced if a detail plan for the get in
get out get going sign was submitted. Mr. Majeed said it was not a sign it is a non illuminated
decal sign. Board members said they did not believe the sign was wananted. Mr. Majeed said
that they would remove the get in get out get going sign. The reason for the 4 inch variance for
width of sign is due to the illumination wiring and lights being housed in the plastic. The signs
are florescent lights and the lights must be 4 to 6 inches from the plastic housing. Mrs. Sergi
questioned the building commissioner's note that the signs must be 4 inches below the rim of the
roof. Mr. Majeed said the signs will be placed 4 inches below the roof and the working plans
will have diinensions.
Ms. Rudolph aslced Mr. Mitchell if the projection variances should be 5%z inches as the bottom of
the price sign is 7%2 inches wide. Mr. Mitchell said there are now 2 additional wall signs on the
canopy instead of tluee. The gas price sign can be identified as being 5%z inch wide. He told the
applicant that the signs would have to be installed 4 inches below the underside of the canopy.
He did not object to the width of the signs as the canopy does not allow the signs to be recessed.
Mrs. Diver commended the applicant for removing two wall signs which board members did not
feel were necessary. Ms. Rudolph said it was noted in the Planning and Design Commission
minutes that the price sign location was due to state code which requires the gas price be visible
to the main road. Ms. Rudolph moved, seconded by Mrs. Bellido to grant CMS10-33: GetGo Fuel Station of
27264 Loi-ain Iaoad the following variances:
1. A varilnce for four (2) additional canopy signs; code permits two (2), applicant
shows (4), section 1163.29(a).
2. A vai-iance for additional5 1/2" in projection from the face of the canopy; code allows
2" and the applicant shows 7%Z ", signs C(2), D, D(3), section 1163.29(b).
All canopy signs may not be less than 4 inches from the top or edge of the canopy. The
motion was approved 4-0.
A brief discussion ensued related to anyone introducing an ordinance which pertains to the Board
of Zoning Appeals chapter being submitted to the board for comments prior to being adopted by
Council. Board members asked why there wasn't a response from the city planner; the clerlc said
she did not voice the concerns as questions to be answered but as comments to be involved in
any firture ordinance which pertains to the board. The clerlc reviewed that each board member's
contact infoi7nation was forwarded to the Clerlc of Council to be added to her list for minutes and
agendas.
